you must have been living in the past millenium .., like me ... my phone lasts 10d. but with a pda phone, charging every night is a good thing ... needing to conserve power towards the end of the day is pretty common - right?
One thing to note is that background apps now affect milage too. I realize now that I had Skype and a couple of other network aware apps open.
The latest version of Skype stays connected while backgrounding so you can still receive Skype calls in another app or from the lock screen. Something to be aware of.
jstr: I'm currently on usage 5 hours 4 mins, standby 11 hours 27, 6 mins calltime and 27% battery charge remaining. .
5hrs 10mins usage, standby 11hrs 12mins. 34%
at 10:10 this morning it was down to 11%.. before I needed to charge before going out. That was 23hours.. and usage was somewhere near 7hrs. I was impressed as this was a lot more usage than a normal day, including a number of location based services including accessing from 3G as well as wifi. Calling was probably less than 15 mins. Sorry was not so diligent in capturing stats.
im on 52% with a usage of 5 hours + 46minutes and standby of 7hours + 50minutes. i HAVE plugged it in to sync some wallpapers tho
i have had 3G on all day with push on fb + mail. been playing around internet for most of the 5hours to sort out my contacts etc. wifi+bluetooth turned off.
might last the whole of tomorrow as well since i have class = no playing on iphone but we will see
I'm still 19 days from my ip4 shipping - But have an ipod touch and can speak of my battery life issues with that!
#1 - turn off the wifi, especially if you're on the move, it polls every access point it passes.
#2 - I've found turning the screen down makes the biggest difference, with the screen at ~20% bright (it's dim in the bus where I use it the most) it'll go almost all week. with 1.5hrs use a day.
#3 - h.264 encoded videos seem to make less hit on the battery (smaller file size to) , encode to fit the screen only.
#4 games suck - an hour playing peggle kills half my battery, If you're wanting games, get some that are written specifically for, not some pop cap garbage that's been ported.
#5 get used to hitting the lock. As soon as you finish using or looking at it, hit the lock button, turn off the screen and save accidentally firing up a game that decimates the battery, playing in your pocket...
#6 Close excess safari pages. Somehow having every available safari page open sucks the life from it.
There's lots of crap written about making your battery last longer but thats what i've learnt through extensive testing.
alastairkn: If your worried about battery life, jailbreak and turn off ios multitasking. (if you want multitasking get backgrounder from cydia) this is what i have done on my 3gs as i found it too slow multitasking, and it was chewing though the battery.
The principle behind iOS Multitasking is to preserve battery life. There are only 7 specific functions that will run in background. It does not leave all apps running in background - however keep an eye on some functions such as background location (biggest drain), background audio - which you should consider to be the same as running in FG, and VoIP. A lot will depend on how devs build their apps.
Today not as good performance, from 5am to 8pm now (15hrs..) I am down to 20%. Having said that, I have been more reliant on 3G connection, bluetooth, and re-paired with car BT and it transferred 1950contacts. 5hrs 20mins usage and 13hrs standby. Will probably last until bed, and then charge again before morning.
