So, to clarify, does this mean that I will be able to log into Apple's online store early on Friday morning to place my pre order or are we still waiting on that sort of detail to be announced?

Probably due to Apples agreement with Vodafone.

Whether or not Telecom wanted to sell it they probably couldn't get their hands on the iPhone. For an operator that wasn't selling the iPhone they sure went out of their way to make it easy for iPhone owners to set their phones up on the XT network.

Lets not forget the recent Carrier Settings pushed to phones on XT recently. I don't see that for any other carrier. This, personally, is it a strong indication that they would be coming to XT.

I'd say that had more to do with the phone not actually working properly with iOS 5 with out that carrier bundle.

The announcement said pre-orders from the 4th so I'd say you can go nuts. The only thing still in question is Apple announcing their 'official' carriers. Doesn't mean diddly if you want to buy one from Apple direct.

Looks like Vodafone is definitely a carrier, seeing as it's all over their website now.... just says coming 11 November, but no other details so far.

Haven't been over to the Telecom site yet to see if they've also got it on offer...

Fantastic! It will be interesting to see how long after the 11th it takes to get it delivered to me.

I'm hoping that they will also have accessories available when they open pre-orders on Friday, although all I really need is a slim case and dock adaptor so I guess existing iPhone 4 accessories might be fine for the 4S in this instance.

I did read that the audio mute and up/down buttons are not identically located, as per the 4, so check that before you buy

Hee, cheeky you! Lemme expand on my comment!

IF you are happy with your carrier, then a 24 month contract is neither here nor there. Its largely irrelevant in that circumstance. If you then calculate the cost of buying the phone outright, plus 24 months plan you use, and compare that to the 24 month contract terms you may find its not a bad deal. It may cost a tad more, but that may mean you pay a tad more than your lowish plan, yet you have a large plan.

If you flip between carriers, then the contract isn't a benefit, but these days the carriers are closer

Yes the buttons and mute buttons are in slightly different locations so make sure your case fits an iPhone 4S properly before you buy one but apart from that all other ports are the same.

i think it depends on whether you are the first few to put the order in or the nth customer ... they ship direct from foxconn factory in china, my friend who ordered on the eve of the opening (open to order) night in Oz got hers after about 2 weeks ...

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...
