Whats the point of customers getting a iPhone 5 on a 24month contract and then the same customers going into a draw to be able to buy the one out right..??

I thought it would be like if you are among the first 35 (broken down respectively amongst the 4 stores) you can purchase outright there and then..

So let me get this right,

Vodafone have got 35 black 16GB iphones for sale , BUT they will not sell them to you unless you go into a draw..... talk about utter fail

Just did a quick loop at lunchtime here in Welly CBD... JB Hi-FI confirm they will have phones on a first-in, first-served basis. All phones to be sold on Vodafone only 24 month contract. He also said that "no one is selling the phones not on a contract tomorrow here in NZ", and thought it could be up to 3 months before it is able to be bought outright.

Telecom Willis Street (Telecom Central) confirm they will be doing midnight opening, selling only on a 24-month contract. Also saw the lady there who's first in queue.. looked like she was the only one - Obviously very keen! No information on buying outright or availability, they said they *think* that customers would be able to buy outright about the same time staff will be able to buy the phones (which last year was approx 3 months) - Also no info on shorter term plans (eg. 12 months)

Yoobee Wellington said they will have NO stock tomorrow. They also said they did not have pretty much any information on when they would have stock, and advised to check back tomorrow...

Dick Smith (Manners) confirmed they also have no stock tomorrow, but the store person there believed that he had heard that they are going to be the first reseller to be selling the new iPhones outright, due to DSE being the largest retail store network...

Hope that this info helps someone! --FYI, as it is with these things, you may want to take some of this info with a grain of salt, as who knows how well informed each storeperson is...

Any ideas what Apple Store was like for last years 4S launch, as regards stock?

Given that they would not want to run out first, and that no one appears to be selling outright for possibly weeks, a 12-01am online order may be the ticket.

the fail would be if no-one entered the draw, the non-fail is that the 215 people that are in line that don't get the phone outright are quite likely to sign up on a 24 month contract...

Good marketing ploy really as they may get more people on the contract at these locations because of this.

For me it is a fail as it has not encouraged me to go line up, but that doesn't say much I have no intention of buying an Iphone 5 until work gives me one, and that is not going to happen until atleast November 2013 !

In my experience, Apple don't update their website at 12:01am. It's always a random time like 5pm (NZT) or 11am (on the actual day of the launch, not the day before).
