Peoples faces change more than their fingerprints too. Wouldn't be much fun having a transaction denied after a big night out, having a hangover, looking worse for wear.

IMHO the solution is putting the fingerprint sensor on the back, like lots of android phones. None of the leaks/rumors currently entertain this idea.

Also what is to stop someone 3D printing a face, or doing a plaster cast. I can't really see it being more secure than a finger print sensor. Especially as peoples faces change over time.

Wow, that is a hell of a lot of work and expense to just make a phone call from someone's phone!

I'm sure with the same kind on investment TouchID could be fooled too.

If this turns out to be correct it will be interesting to see how many units they manage to sell. I reluctantly spent $1600 on my 6S which I thought was a huge sum of money and to be fair I don't regret it because I've got a lot of use out of it, but that would be the absolute limit of what I would spend.

They will still sell many, as many will get them on contract, where they are paying them off every month with a plan. As the supply will likely be limited initially due to hardware and screen shortages, they probably aren't going to be that worried if it doesn't sell as well as the 7s/8 model to begin with. But I do wonder how many people will actually want the 7s/8 with the LCD screen, when the OLED version is going to look potentially so much better and more modern.

I purchased the Iphone7+ 128gb ($1629) yes it was on my plan and I am paying it off over 12 months. I plan on purchasing the iPhone8/Pro/Edition version and expect the similar model to be around $2,000.

When I purchased my iPhone6S+ outright it was the larger capacity at $1800, to me getting 128gb for less was a bonus, I am hoping there is some justification on the iPhone8 like that so hopefully a smaller storage option say 128gb vs 256gb vs 512gb puts the device closer to what I want to spend.

For many it is also a laptop replacement. Also a lot more affordable than a house mortgage. If buying outright, then yes that can be an issue. Personally I don't think I would spend more than 1k on a phone.

Samsung has been setting the benchmark, but I think the new full screen on the apple iphone will be a bit of a game changer, and you will see most new phones coming out with that sort of look. Not that there aren't already some full screen phones, but apple sets the trend.

Apple hasnt been setting the trend in phones for a while now....fact.

I am on a iphone 7 and generally have purchased most iphones outright on launch or as soon as possible after. I see nothing in my phone that is currently better than many competitors products. The camera is proven to NOT be the best on the market and we know their are better screens on competitors products. IOS is also feeling a little old and in need of a refresh like itunes.

I (yes my opinion) will probably try the new Google Pixel when it releases later this year. The existing phone is already better then the iphone 7 in many respects.

In design they still do, but the iPhone has been falling behind in technology and things like screen ratio. But this new iPhone edition model will set a new benchmark, as even Samsung phones don't have total edge to edge screens on all sides.

The thing about Apple is they provide iOS support for many years, unlike my experience with other brand. So yes you may pay more but iOS on it maybe supported up to 5 years in some cases! This means the iPhone can last many years.

Wow, that is a hell of a lot of work and expense to just make a phone call from someone's phone!

I'm sure with the same kind on investment TouchID could be fooled too.

The risk is not someone else making a call on your phone; it's the possibility of them accessing confidential information on it or maliciously deleting data off iCloud.

I think if I were designing a phone today I would look biometrics, but I think it would be a mistake to remove the tactility provided by the buttons on the phone. I would suggest that buttons give a level of feedback that affects emotion much more than a flat surface.

Unless there has been an improvement in screen capability, I probably wouldnt at this point in time consider putting fingerprint reading capability into the screen as adding an IR layer intruduces a cost/complexity issue.

Innovation is great as long as it is affordable....imo the top smart phones will start hitting a barrier soon where consumers think they are not worth the price.

Im looking at a new lawnmower, $1600. Ridiculous to spend that much on a lawnmower! Doesnt even have a catcher! A phone for $2000, thats insane.

It sure will. But they got that covered as we can buy a new phone interest free, nothing down, $X a month on the bill. If that wasnt the case, the sales would have to drop a lot. Its a bit like house prices, interest is low, I can pay more. Interest free on a phone allows me to pay a stupid price and it wont bite me.

I used to buy every one from 4S, outright. Ive lost that mojo with them now, its just a phone. I got my 6+ on interest free, if the 8 is great, I might do that again, and keep it for ages. I think there will be more people "keeping it for ages" than there has been before, maybe thats already the case. Maybe they are going to do more innovation and less incremental from now on? But they are so mature that itself is hard.

When the iphone 4 was sold, it was half price at vodafone if you signed up for a $29 plan for 2 years, and it came with 3GB data! (about 2.9GB more than normal plans at that time)
