khull: Anyone done a spreadsheet comparison like last year?

I've done a very rough one
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/67065/4stco.pdf

I've based it on wanting a 64gb phone with 1gb of data. first column is just keeping my existing 3gb iphone plan and purchasing outright. Seems the subsidies are actually worth it...

I find it odd that VF would favour 2,500 txts on a device they (should) know has its own messaging app, then offer just 250mb of data. Makes very little sense to me.

At least all the skeletons are out of the closet finally. Since my main beef with VF is the data speed in Wgtn, I think these unbalanced plans have confirmed to me it's time to take the plunge and see if the grass really is greener on the XT side of the fence.

Think about it from the carrier perspective, where does all the money come from with these plans? Mostly from the calling and txting which the vast majority of you (myself included) do not really use. Think about it logically, if you're hardly ever using the calling and txting then why are you paying $45+ a month for some 500MB of Internet?

Lizard1977: For those who have pre-ordered with Telecom, what's the deal about pick up or shipping? Do you have a choice about getting it shipped to you or can you choose to collect it from a local store? The latter would be ideal for me...

You have to wait for it to arrive at the address you specified unfortunately, you can't pick up in-store.

Or you can cancel the order from online and then go get one in store (Note: Credit Card refunds can take quite some time though).

Actually I call people quite a lot. It's texting I can't be bothered with.

So why get a plan with txting if your not going to use it? Sounds like a waste of money to me.

What would everyone recommend.

I want to get one on a plan and terminate it after 12 months, so I can buy the next one obviously.

So far if I go on Telecom and a 32GB iPhone 4S
according to: http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/schedule_of_disconnection_fees_1_feb_2011_updated.pdf

$40/month the phone cost $849
Terminated after 12 months costs $130.
Total Price = $849 + ($40 * 12) + $130 = $1459

$60/month the phone cost $699
Terminated after 12 months costs $180.
Total Price = $699 + ($60 * 12) + $180 = $1599

$80/month the phone cost $299.
Terminated after 12 months costs $280.
Total Price = $299 + ($80 * 12) + $280 = $1539

For Vodafone (32GB iPhone 4S as well)
according to: http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/13852/

$45/month the phone cost $799
Terminated after 12 months costs $45*12 * 50% = $270.
Total Price = $799 + ($45 * 12) + $270 = $1609

$65/month the phone cost $699
Terminated after 12 months costs $65*12 * 50% = $390.
Total Price = $699 + ($65 * 12) + $390 = $1869

$80/month the phone cost $299.
Terminated after 12 months costs $85*12 * 50% = $510.
Total Price = $299 + ($85 * 12) + $510 = $1829

These are the total price for the phone and 12 months worth of monthly fees and termination fee on the 13th month.

It makes big sense to me. They know from watching patterns that most people won't se anything like that many tests, especially people with a smart phone with messaging apps, so it won't cost them anything, its just an impressive looking number but to be honest it might as well be unlimited for the difference it will make.

The biggest restriction they have on their plans is 250MB data. I am in wifi a lot of the time and still use way more than that. Giving 1GB for the first 6 months is just bait, it makes sure people don't scrimp and try and stay within 250mb so when the 6 months is up they'll pay the extra $20 and thus taking the monthly charge up by quite a considerable amount.

These plans have been designed to make it look good for people who don't think ahead. Low handset price but the numbers in the wrong columns when it comes to what you get included in your plan. and then theres the lack of being able to change plans. I'd run a mile in the other direction!

That's my point. I don't want texting, but I don't have a choice. I want a plan with minutes and data, and maybe a few texts. But Vodafone are saying "2500 texts! wayhey!" while taking away data with the other hand. I'd happily trade 2450 of those texts for 1gb of data, but I don't have that option.

from the vodafone plan table:

** If you're on a 1, 12 or 24 month term you’ll get 1GB of data each month for 6 months while you remain on the plan. 1GB Add-On available for $20 per month after that period.

just add it on to the smart 45 or smart 65 and the only real difference is the initial handset discount.

<___< stop being precious.

Yeah, or I could just go to XT and get what I want for $20 less a month.

Yep, seriously tempted. Only thing even vaguely keeping me on VF is BestMate.
