Some rumours have the charging port disappearing altogether in future models. A screen without a notch and no ports would be dope!

I'm not keen on that because it will be several years before I have a car with wireless CarPlay.

Except the charging cables apple provides usually always fail around the lightning plug, as the rubber breaks down. I have made sure I haven't touched the rubber cable on mine and that has helped, as I think the oils in the skin are absorbed by the cable causing it to break down faster. I would have been more accepting if they switched to USB-c from lightning which they have done with the ipad pro. but I don't think they have on the iPhones yet. So many people will need to buy a charger that will fit the new cable especially if they want faster charging. Otherwise wireless charging, but personally I find it too slow unless doing it overnight and it is often easier to just plug in a cable that positioning it on the pad correctly in the dark

Yes, if they want faster charging they will have to obtain a new power adapter. However, if their old cable breaks, they could just buy a new one, $6 for a non-MFI one, $35 for an Apple one (both 1m) and utilise their existing adapters with the current charging speed.

I've got the original apple cable from my iphone 7 and it is perfectly fine, and I've not paid any special attention about where I touch the rubber cable. I've also got 3-4 non-Apple ones about the same age, all still ship-shape.

I just bought a cheapish head unit and bluetooth to it. Works fine for a "wireless" experience, would be screwed if I needed to charge in the car though!

Love the return to the flat edges, love the colour options - wish the green was a bit more saturated. OLED gives me headaches so I'm not necessarily a fan of that being the only choice (although I hear this improved since the iPhone X).

A good release, great hardware as always but nothing breathtaking.

As far as the event itself went, I love how polished these pre-recorded keynotes are from Apple. They do a great job.

There is a bit more to Carplay than what Bluetooth/charger offers.

It would have made perfect sense for them to go with USB-C on their iphone pro models. Infact it would have been logical, so that they follow the ipad pro models. eg If you buy a 'pro' model, you get USB-C and the features it offers, whereas normal models, you get lightning.

The only real difference I can see between the pro and normal models is the camera and features and LiDAR sensor, and I am not sure that justifies the price difference for most people. If it is a pro model, at least make it more of  pro device.

I'm keen to see if the new glass is better at scratch resistance as the last few models seem to scratch very easily.

 

 

I am wondering about this too. My XS Max seems to have been very scratch prone so I'm more concerned about that than the impact resistance.

 

I have not seen a phone yet made - other than the ludicrously expensive Vertu ones and I think one special edition HTC - that have screens that won't scratch with just normal pocket stuff like coins and keys. It's all very well stuffing them with chips that would run a space shuttle etc ut a bit more attention to everyday durability would be better for most people I suspect.

I will give you the flat edges - a better look. I still think (as I did when the original iPhones with that style were around) that the surface should be knurled for grip rather than smooth.

The best version of this IMO was the diamond cut edges of the iphone 5s. Essentially they have gone back to this design with the iphone 12.

mmWave 5G is limited to the states I see. I wonder if it's just a firmware/software update to enable if other countries get mmWave in the future or if they have different radio chips in them.

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you look at the US v Rest of World Iphone, there is a patch on the right hand side of the rail of the US version for mmWave. So no. It wouldn’t be enabled in future elsewhere. 

 

Still its a bit surprising that mmWave is not supported elsewhere.   Is the US networks implementation different to other parts of the world?

Any word on whether VF and Spark will support mmWave in the cities?

I think (or hope) that Apple would create some kind of dongle for this exact reason – tricking the CarPlay head unit into thinking it's still connected via cable, whereas it's really a dongle that transmits wirelessly to the iPhone via Bluetooth or even a faux-WiFi connection (all done seamlessly of course).

I know there are existing third party solutions to create wireless CarPlay (with various levels of quality/reliability), but if Apple baked it in to iOS itself there's no reason it couldn't work 100% of the time.

That would be really cool. I wouldn't touch the existing third party solutions because of the reliability issues that you site, but if Apple could perfect the concept then I could live with that. Alternatively I'd be happy if a reputable accessory maker like Belkin were to produce one with MFi certification.

AFAIK Their is not even a NZ or agreed international bandplan in that part of the spectrum for mobile services... its a way off...
