Ensure everything is updated before you try. Mine failed first up. I had done a OS update but it had missed an iPhoto update. I updated iPhoto and the upgrade to IOS5  worked a dream.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The capacity on my 16gb iPhone seems to be down from 14.33gb pre iOS5 to 13.73 after.

Downloading iOS 5, mine got to 774.4MB of 774.4MB at a steady 17 Mbps ... and then timed out at 100%. What the...?!

I'm now downloading it all again. $1 more for Xnet, I suppose!

have had multiple fails with the internal error message. Read something here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1247440&page=1 which suggested putting phone into airplane mode. WTF I think, how can this possibly have any bearing on the problem when it seems that the issue is with contacting apples servers. Anyway put my 3gs into flight mode and bang, first time it starts updating as it should.

Coincidence......maybe?

Was just about to say "restore all done just gotta wait for it to sync all my music" then I realised there was no need to wait. Cause I remembered you can use it while it's syncing.

I came on here to comment on this! I love not being locked out of my device now when it's syncing.

Successful after several tries. Now waiting for it to sync movies and music. Very slow, seems to be doing in the background?

Airplane mode didnt work, gonna try it again anyway

Then ill try the restore method, for those not wanting to download it again, you can find the file here
c:/users/*user*/appdata/roaming/apple computer/itunes/ipod software updates

Well that didnt work... just bypassed the long as heck backup time and gave same internal error...

I've changed my mind, I think I'm gonna wait a while. Currently I'm using a jailbroken iPhone as WiFi Analyzer has been very handy for work in verifying WiFi networks I've set up are working as intended and not channel-clashing with neighbours. Not ready to lose that just yet as it's come in handy twice in the past week. It's the only jailbroken app I use.

Worked for me eventually and have confirmed it had trouble connecting with overloaded Apple servers.

All done and synced, no obvious issues. At last I can change my new email tone!
However, I can't work out how to enable gestures? 1st gen iPad should support them? Swiping down from top reveals notification centre, but cannot pinch to return to home screen or swipe to change apps etc. something I'm missing?
Love the new split keyboard also!

Edit....
Well it looks like 1st gen iPad owners are SOL at the moment with gestures. DAMMIT, this was one of the features I was most looking foward to, a quicker way to switch between apps. Booooooooo.

For iCloud calenders you might want to enable time zones by clicking the settings icon -> advanced. then go to the main page and click your name and set your time zone. otherwise you get some wacky times when it syncs onto your phone.
