If you look at how Airplay is becoming more and more usual in HiFi components, I think a similar development for hardware support in other devices aren't that hard to envision. Will take some time though.

But as you say SumnerBoy, might be another integration all together. And with a bridge it really isn't that much of a worry, is it?

I am pretty sure Airplay is software only isn't it? HiFi components don't need anything hardware related to comply, for example my Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc supports AirPlay. But you are right, as long as these bridges are available we should be able to hack things into HomeKit in some form.

I believe one of the reasons Apple is taking this approach is for security. Which to be fair, is a valid concern. By enforcing devices to have this hardware 'dongle' or whatever it is, they can implement very strong encryption and security measures, rather than just relying on a software API.

All speculation at this point, in a few days hopefully we will know a lot more!

Behodar: Wi-Fi Calling is for making calls over Wi-Fi, and requires operator support. I've forgotten what the "computer pairing" thing is called but I know what you're talking about there.

ALTRON: So when will IOS8 become available to download?

Apparently this week, after the fanboyfest starting around 6:00 am our time this morning.

What I am looking forward to most is the availability of third-party virtual keyboards on the iPad that have proper cursor movement keys rather than iOS's annoying touch-the-screen cursor marker. I use SwiftKey on my Android phone and on my wife's Samsung tablet. Apart from the cursor keys, it has the most amazing intelligent predictive text system that learns from your past use and is uncannily accurate. SwiftKey have confirmed that their iPad version will be available soon after iOS8's release. Can't wait - the sooner the better.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Was very happy to see you can now set your Exchange OoO on the phone at last, but changing the message only seems to change the internal OoO message.

just downloading this now, seemed to be quite fast compared to other years. I had to free up 4.4 gigs (or 4.6....cant quite remember) before it would let me download it which meant deleting a whole heap of photos and a few apps that were hogging space (Ive only got a 16 gig Iphone 5). Really looking forward to the swipe keyboard :)

Nice! I'm assuming you have a large library of music since it sounds like you think it'll take some time to move. Have you thought about using iTunes Match? Stores all your music in the cloud and replaces any low-def mp3's with AAC versions. $34.99\year, although I suspect that will come down shortly with the new iCloud Drive prices that were announced.

22 mins remaining on iOS8 download...

Its not that much, 3300 tracks, I prefer to be in full controil, i.e. sync to my own computer,. But I have pdf files in Goodreader, photos in a seperate foilder on the Win 7 laptop, etc, etc, etc. Its more case of shall I use Migration Assistant via a hard drive (which I dont think I can do), or shall I manually set it up on the Mac and manually duplicate the sync settings, or shall I copy the iTunes folder onto an external and copy to the Mac? I am favouring the latter. No doubt there will be "oops, that didnt work, Ill fix that now" issues for some stuff, but thats ok.
Admittedly, while I use the Mac daily, I've been a bit slack on learning much of OSX, I'll do that in earnest when Yosemite is on it

I'd go the external drive route too.

Going back to the iOS8 upgrade, depending on your requirements for syncing  to\from your iDevices and your Mac, wait until Yosemite is out until you turn on iCloud Drive on your iDevice, otherwise your Mac will not be able to access stuff from your iDevices.
