JimmyC: I'd go the external drive route too.

Going back to the iOS8 upgrade, depending on your requirements for syncing  to\from your iDevices and your Mac, wait until Yosemite is out until you turn on iCloud Drive on your iDevice, otherwise your Mac will not be able to access stuff from your iDevices.

Will do, cheers

Updated the iPad Air this morning. Some nice improvements. The word suggestions on the keyboard are a welcome addition. Not sure why they moved the bookmarks button and menu in Safari to the left side? Performance seems much the same as before.

Updated the iPod Touch 5 as well. Some lag opening apps now, and the animation is a little bit jerky. It's not bad, but not as smooth as IOS7. It looks like iOS8 may need more than 500MB of RAM to run smoothly.

Updated 5S no issues in about 30 min via iTunes.  Struggling to find anything terribly improved.  Word suggestions (haven't Android had that for like ever?), quick reply to messages (meh) and pop up recent contacts (yawn).  Terribly underwhelmed thus far.  They didn't even fix the horrible UI of the calendar or the terribly designed music player.   Hopefully the under the bonnet changes will become a bit more apparent with use.

Seems more or less the same.

Healthkit is pointless - NFI in that to be honest. Still can't delete the *&^% Stocks app.

iBooks too expensive in NZ compared with Kindle so never use that.

I have noticed that wifi and cell signal strength seem to have improved a notch though.

There's some things like audio clips in iMessages, whole word suggestions in emails etc, quick access to recent contacts etc.

It's got little in the way of visual changes AFAICT. No doubt there is stuff under the bonnet - but since that may as well be particle physics for all my understanding of it, I can't say what!

The ability to have custom keyboards is worth the upgrade alone for me, although I do appreciate some of the other tweaks. Its a feature that still needs some refinement, as its still a little unstable (forgets my primary keyboard, and once no keyboard popped up for a text input field). But I'm over the moon that I can finally have Swype as my primary input mechanism on my iPhone. That and the 4.7" screen are the only things I really missed when switching from my One X to the 5s.

Third party keyboards are a killer feature. Sharing content to different apps in a similar fashion to Android most welcome as well.

Thankfully that business of displaying recent/favourite contacts in the app switcher can be turned off as it's not to my tastes.

I actually like that feature. But its great that its not thrust upon those that don't. Perhaps Apple is warming to the fact that it is sometimes OK to let the user decide which UX works best for them. :-)

Hadn't even noticed that. That change will really annoy my wife, I think. She's not an overly technical user, but took to her iPhone like a duck to water due to its ease of use. This looks like a significant backwards step.

Its probably no biggie, BUT what I hate about these updates, is they list the 7 cool changes. Then over the next few days a big list of small other stuff turns up, found out by the users, I hate that. I'd like a list of ALL changes, even if these are one liner descriptions.

Camera Roll - Split to 30 Day view only, balance are in Albums     as an example

Is there a viable swipe keyboard option now?  I miss that from my budget android phone as it's a good way to interface with the small iPhone sized screen.
