nunasdream: Did they seriously just raise the SE price $50? I could have sworn it was $799 and now it's $849

It’s a currency adjustment. The USD price hasn’t changed, the value of the NZD is low.

What's not to like, for a Mountain Biker?

I think the bit not to like is the thought of scraping a smart watch during a long slide, or worse landing on a rather large G-Shock!! So no watches on the wrist for me.

Garmin 520 on the stem.

Right then, carry on.

It goes up and down all the time. I don't think they often drop the price when the NZD is high. Also other models I checked don't appear to have  gone up. eg The iphone 13 pro vs the 14 Pro is still $1799

You think wrong. It gets adjusted a few times a year in line with the currency.

In the last year NZD to USD has dropped from 70c to 60c. Apple haven’t changed the price they charge, it just costs more New Zealand dollars to pay that price.

I've seen product prices fall on a new model, when the exchange rate is high

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Yes. Sneaky of them . It is still $799 at NL, but 64GB IMO is too small for many you really need at least the 128GB these days.

Then I'm glad I bought the 128GB SE 14 days ago (-17% in free trade compared to the Apple Store now). Not too bad for nearly the same CPU processing power as the 14.

Whoops, I was looking at the 14 Plus which I think is a new size for the non pro models, which is $1799. So the base Pro model has gone up $200, quite a lot more as a percentage than the SE, which is just $50.

So the US model has no SIM tray, eSIM only. If I’m with Spark, that would work ok, right? I’ll be in the US in October and might pick up a pro since it’s a bit cheaper there.

It is only the US version that is eSim only, but in saying that it will be a clear message to all carriers that they need to implement eSim

Anyone else planning to go online at midnight Friday, when iPhone 14 pre-orders open, to try and be near the head of the queue on Apple Store?

Nope

I dont see enough change in any of the Apple products I have to bother upgrading this year.

Same, which is nice as it frees up budget for MacBook Pro M2 when that comes out.

Does anyone know (based on past experience) if any NZ retailers normally drop the price of previous models after the announcement of this new iPhone 14?

As I'm looking to get an iPhone, either 12/12 mini/13 mini, but thought I'd wait in case price drops?

Apple generally keep the previous two generations of iPhone available as cheaper alternatives, but it's my understanding that the 12 mini and 13 mini will be discontinued so you would have to opt for a full size model or an SE.

PBTech tend to run specials on watch, which is good if you pay cash and avoid their surcharges. I've seen iPads on regular deal as well as JBHifi etc, but they tend to be on 'Cost+GST' deals, and floor stock only which almost always excludes the iPads with Cellular models

For phones, I've observed deals through the carriers for new connections - I expect 2D and Voda to soon start running a few hundred dollars off for new connections. When the exchange rate moves back and NZD approach $0.70, rather than adjust the RRP of phones the deals tend to get a little better.

Unlike the rest of the world where you can just keep the phone discounted directly for sale, which is very tiresome!
