I heard bad stories about upgrading the 3GS to iOS 5, so it has remained at 4.3.5. I've read that iOS 6 is much better, but not sure if that is a comparison to iOS 5, i.e. 6 is better that 5, but neither 5 nor 6 are better than 4?

Edit: iOS 6.1 is begin offered currently for this device

iOS 5 worked OK on it... but frankly I don't think you'll find any benefit. The only reason I could think of for doing it would be if there was an app that you *had to have* which required a later iOS version. Otherwise it just makes your phone run slower for not much benefit.

it does if you have apps that use maps and you go straight to apple maps with no streetview or other details, and links don't go to google maps

just a very major annoyance if you happen to need it like us

I haven tried it on a 3GS but have heard (like you) that iOS 6 is alright speed wise on the 3GS.

I feel like iOS6 doesn't bring much benefit over iOS5 however, and actually I've encountered more bugs & glitches in iOS 6 than any other iOS in the last 2.5 years.

(Namely, going to the settings sometimes crashes the settings app? - pauses for a long time, then takes you back to he home screen, and news stand would get stuck downloading some subscription - national geographic? at 99% and couldn't be removed)

Thanks, she's not complained of an app not being available so best leave it alone.

Really? I have found that most apps and upgrades now need at least ios5. But it depends if you update your apps or not.
The ig problem with the app store is you can't get an older version of an app, to run under an old version of ios, and many ios devices are crippled now to older ios versions.

She plays basic puzzle games and uses IMDB and Facebook. The upgrades for those have (so far) supported iOS 4

I think the latest IMDB update now needs IOS5. But the old version should work for a while longer.

My 3GS is running 6.1 and it is markedly faster than 5, but not as good as 4. The only benefit for me has been the notifications as I really only use my iPhone as a phone and for tethering now I have an iPad.

I hadn't heard (and haven't found) iOS 6 to be buggy at all. I'm only on 6.0.1 atm, but will be upgrading soon.

Are you finding probs on 6.1, or an earlier version? I usually find an app crash to be not caused by the iOS, but maybe a memory leak from another app (I think) and usually find a shut down and restart, or quitting apps from the 'fast switching dock' or a hard reboot (hold sleep/wake button & home button until Apple logo comes on) seems to clear anything up.

Cheers,
Mike

And they removed coverflow from itunes . Yet their TV ad for the latest iphone promotes coverflow. I think apple is becoming confused.I am staying with the older version of itunes, especially after the new version it kept freezing and crashing in windows.
