wally22: Just be patient and you will get something OK. Feel free to post details for others to check.

Ok will do thanks. I really respect and appreciate the knowledge from everyone on here so will bide my time until something good comes up.

If you could please tell me to stop looking (and buying!) Vinyl then I might actually listen (and not get in trouble from the gf lol)

Thanks

No description, but presumably does NOT have a phono pre-amp.

I could not live with that colour scheme at any price  (WAF = -10)  wink

Keep looking - there's no rush smile

Thanks for that. The colour doesn't bother me, just the quality and the price matters lol.

This seems a tad pricey considering a Google search comes up with people buying it for $10 USD

Re: Pro-ject Debut III.  No pre-amp. Available new from Amazon for $US299 so maybe not such a bargain 2nd hand. An entry level but reasonably specced tt with the ortofon cartridge.

He does have the original shipping box too, that's a plus as its in Queenstown.

So after quite a bit of contemplating and research I've decided to increase my budget to around $500. I know it's not a lot, but will hopefully get me something that's fairly capable.

I've read good things about these, but still a tad over budget (needing pre amp as well)

I had an early Dual 50x in the '70s and it put me off them. Its a personal thing. It probably was a bad example/model perhaps.

No experience with the rega. Saw richms had an experience with them, but he may have been still in DJ mode instead of audiophile:) No slur intended.

It was more the build quality of it, everything about it seemed to be not quite there on it like they had to make it differenite from the more expensive models, which is hard when its just a motor on a plank. and absurdly microphonic compared to the technics. Loads of suggestions about other feet or puting the thing on a slice of heavy rock/conctete etc to try to solve that, but the microphonic nature of it, combined with me liking the bass up lead to really bad bass and occasional episodes of feedback on some LPs

It's a slippery slope this vinyl addiction. I started by borrowing a friends old low-end technics and his old dirty records just to give it a try. Decided I liked the sound so brought a ProJect Debut Carbon with an Ortofon OM10 cartridge.

Since then I've upgraded the platter to perspex, been through 2 stylus upgrades (OM20 and now OM30) and added a Project Speedbox. Each upgrade has made a very noticeable difference and makes me wonder what a more expensive rig would sound like. Not to mention all the money spent on vinyl and vinyl storage.

If I were you I would increase the budget to around $800 (wait and save) and just buy a new Project rig.

I recently got a new Project Elemental, with a phono box, and an RCA-3.5mm lead to contect it to my Sony mini system (I'm no audiophile obviously) and it works, and sounds great - in the context of a relatively budget new set-up.

Do not stop the vinyl!!!

I imported an Audio Technica from Amazon a few years ago, and have been very happy with it. At the time, it cost me NZD $450, including $150 for shipping. RRP at the time was NZD $800.

It has a built-in pre-amp, so should work with most AV receivers, and it sounds a million bucks. I have upgraded the cartridge to this one, but I was pretty happy with the sound before that.

You may need to wait until it's a bit cheaper, as I purchased it for USD $232. At the USD$300 price currently quoted, you may well blow your budget.

Disclaimer: I like my music to sound good, but I'm far from audiophile level fussy.

Disclaimer2: The hydraulic arm mechanism has failed, and Audio Technica refuse to fix it under warranty, as I parallel imported it. It still works, but I have to be careful when lowering the tonearm, as there is nothing to cushion its fall.

I did wonder when someone would increase my budget lol.

I understand what you mean tho, ideally it would sound good out of the box, with the potential to upgrade on a couple of years should I continue to use it. I wouldn't want to be disappointed upon hearing it. Impressed and blown away would be amazing.

On the flip side I could add another $200 to that and get a thorens td190. When do you stop?

My main reason for the low budget was whether or not I would still be playing vinyl in a year's time etc. Plus I should be saving for a house deposit (not sure if that will ever happen tho lol).

A few more websites have recommended the Lp120, pricespy even showed it being sold for $400 last year!

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. Please keep them coming.

After some more research, I'm now toying with the idea of owning an automatic or semi automatic tt! 😱🙊

This may reduce the search option somewhat, and don't offer the same sound quality as manual ones. But after a hard days work on the farm, I don't want to be running around after a record.

What is everyone's thoughts on it?
