So I've recently bought my first vinyl. The only problem is I don't have a turntable to play it on.

I've done a bit of research and have found TT's that are well reviewed are out of my budget.

I'm not sure if this is something I'll use for the rest of my life, or just something out of curiosity (a friend had one and it sounded amazing).

Hopefully I can get a good quality second hand one for $150-$250 (or am I dreaming?)

(Do I need usb?)

Don't worry about USB... it's something you may use once or twice, but frankly it's a complete pain in the butt to do.

Look for a brand name with a good rep (Project / Thorens / Linn (dreaming at this price point) etc.

In particular you're hoping for someone who bought a turntable, never used it and decided the whole 'record thing' was too hard for them.

Many modern ones do not, in which case you'll need a phono preamplifier. (The electrical output from a phono cartridge is very low)

The cheapest good quality turntable brand that I know is Project.

You should look for a second-hand one - but look at it before buying.

Hmm I'm not sure, will have to double check when I get home. It's an onkyo tx nr515.

That project audio does come up a lot when searching, I'll keep an eye out.

Pretty certain you'll find the Onkyo does not have a phono input and that you will thus need a pre-amp as noted above by Sideface.

best place to pickup a phono box is your local JB-Hifi (even though they are not listed as a supplier I can defiantly confirm they are)

I had a "cheap" rega. It was junk. Made me regret offloading my technics from when I thought I would try DJing. Also regret selling them when I did because would cost 5x as much to get 2 decent condition ones of them used now.

Some Project turntables have a phono preamp built in, RCA & USB out (they cost about $100 more than the standard models)

eg the Elemental Phono USB, Essential Phono USB models

The worst-case scenario is that you would need a new stylus. (see http://www.styli.co.nz/)

The cost of new phono cartridges varies from $75 to $5,000 (a bit OTT for a vinyl newbie)

Look at 1116767715 or 1118338402 on Trademe. All I could see tonight that looked viable. Gives you an idea. The 2nd one at $600 is probably a bit high for you though.

I did come across those listings on TM, only one is in my budget tho. I could stretch to a bit more for something a lot better, but nothing has come up.

I am considering the first listing tho, as there doesnt seem to be much to choose from.
