33coupe: After some more research, I'm now toying with the idea of owning an automatic or semi automatic tt! 😱🙊

This may reduce the search option somewhat, and don't offer the same sound quality as manual ones. But after a hard days work on the farm, I don't want to be running around after a record.

What is everyone's thoughts on it?

Automatic turntables tend to be old mass-market items of lower quality than manual turntables.

They are more likely to damage your vinyl.

I would strongly advise you to avoid them.

In addition to this, listening to vinyl is a very manual process anyway. You still need to get out of your chair and flip the record over at the end of side 1. So having a 'Start' button as opposed to manually placing the tonearm doesn't make that much difference.

Also, you'll LOVE* the trend for modern vinyl to have an album spanning two LPs, with 2 - 3 songs per side.

JB HiFi had some half-decent ~$250 units in stock when I looked a little while ago, not listed on their website.

The trick may be getting one with a line-level rather than phono output, otherwise you'll need a phono pre-amp as well if your receiver doesn't have a phono in. The built-in pre-amps do tend to be pretty poor however, so phono is always the best option if possible. I got an Audio Technica AT-LP120 from Amazon when it was on special ~2 years back (via YouShop, shipping was >$100 as it's heavy) and have bypassed the built-in amp and using an external unit I got from eBay instead, sounds noticeably better.

An aunt has a really nice automatic 1970s Sansui record player that I'd love to get my hands on which I repaired for her, usual problem of perished drive belt.

The advantage of non-automatics is that you can get the odd interesting thing like never-ending runout loops (Sergeant Pepper) or records that play from the inside-out (only one I've come across is a Rob Zombie album which I wouldn't buy because Rob Zombie).

And yes, albums with wide grooves are more forgiving of hardware, but they're also a nuisance.

I disagree re: automatic turntables sounding poor.

A cheap, poorly engineered manual turntable will sound poor.

A cheap, poorly engineered automatic turntable will sound poor.

Some brands make autos, some don't.

Personally, I hate being forced WHEN to stand up and lift the needle off. I like auto-lift off, but I certainly don't need an auto start button.

Thats loose change compared to the one I found while browsing at lunchtime: This is more like it, tontearm not included!

With the project, I am a bit concerned with some of the negative reviews I've read (tbh, I have yet to find a tt that doesnt have some bad feedback), and Im having trouble with the idea of possibly parting my hard earned cash for something that's made from MDF!

Hmmmm, will keep looking and waiting.

MDF is an excellent material for a turntable base because it is acoustically "dead".

Same for speakers, which people who insist that real wood sounds better dont seem to understand how inconsistant natural wood is which is why they have to be so selective of which parts are used.

Plus it is dimensionally stable in all axis unlike real wood. With something relying on tension like a belt you dont want things moving strange because it is a dry season etc.

Both of the Regas on Trade me look pretty worn. I really don't understand why the Rega turntables should be worth as much as is asked for them. Typical Hi-fi asylum thing I guess.

What I would look for if I was bothered with vinyl (I used to have a huge collection, got rid of it and haven't really missed it), I would look at something with a decent motor/system and a good pickup (like an Ortofon).

Mind you, the glass Rega, like the Planer Three - do look nice. http://www.rega.co.uk/planar-3-2016.html - just don't think they are worth the price they charge for them.

The Elemental is not what I'd consider a decent turntable...

Save your pennies and get a Debut Carbon if you're going full manual / funky colours.
