So it turns out I missed out on Christmas shopping and possibly going to miss out on boxing day shopping too.

Just putting it out there, if anyone is upgrading to the latest and greatest amp, I'll have your mid-high end last season amp for a cheap price :)

Let me know how you get on with this, either secondhand or new. I am pretty much in exactly the same situation now myself, with the current receiver on its last legs.

Avworld has an excellent sale on. Almost tempted to get a new amp myself, except that I already have a couple of perfectly serviceable ones ( my denon 3312 doesn’t do 4K but I just plug into my lg oled and arc back-means I’m limited to Dolby digital, but I’m only runnning a 3.1setup)

I've just recently bought the low-end Yamaha model.

I'm stoked with its abilities.

4k passthrough

Bluetooth

DTS

Amazing quality for the $400 I paid for it :)

I have a want for 5.1 and active zone 2.

This stuff wasn’t high end back in the day, but it certainly doesn’t appear on many of the lower end equivalent models nowadays.

Where did you score that? I might be able to win WAF at that price :-)

Just ordered the Sony, both seem to be direct competitors, with slightly different features, bit the bullet on the Sony coz it's cheaper and I really don't use the amp that much nowadays, like maybe twice a month. Can always pay the NZ Denon premium in the future.

Looking closer that (STRDN1080) does do powered zone 2.

Let us know how you get on with it.

There's a 2-zone Sony @ JB's for under $700 (1080), there's a $700+ Yamaha @ Harvey's that is also 2-zone (RXV683).

Silly low prices you probably won't see again until next Boxing Day to be fair, so if you're looking either grab one or grab the amp that someone replaces theirs with after purchasing one...

Had a mate pick up the Sony from JBHifi and raves about it now that it i s plugged in a running - initial firmware updates consumed 3Gb+

Great review from WhatHifi https://www.whathifi.com/sony/str-dn1080/review and at $694 (RRP$1388) cannot go wrong I would think.

Very dodgy for an amp to transfer 3gb over the internet! The FBI has you covered now!

PS- does whathifi ever give a bad review?

I've read reviews like "compared to the 1070, the 1080 sounds much superior, the wind sounds much crisper, and the drums in xxx is so much livelier." Hmm ...

I was keen on the Sony as well, but have changed my mind on further research. From what I can see, it doesn't allow Chromecast/internet radio/ airplay etc to be cast directly to zone 2 exclusively. It looks as if it will turn on the main zone as well, which is a nuisance if that is being used for Hdmi on another source. Can anyone comment in their experience with this?

Amps typically only have one DAC for network sources.

Yes, switching on Airplay / DLNA / Spotify etc for Zone 2 will flick Zone 1 onto the same source... but you should be able to switch it back again afterwards.

Of course, for many people this is a deal breaker and the trend is now very much away from single box multi-zone receivers...

At the price you're looking to spend, the only semi-reasonable solution I could recommend would be a Chromecast audio to allow you to cast into Zone 2 where applicable.
