PBTech on sale today $249.

Dick Smith had them on sale last week $219+$15 shipping

Airpods seem to be hot right now, so unless you get lucky with some seconds, might want to consider new.

People I know who have them say they are the schizz, and what looked a little dweeby now looks ok (in comparison to those all in ear ones that look like Lt Uhura's comm piece!)

are they really that great?  i.e. sound/comfort.  Wouldn't a pair of decent noise cancelling (or noise isolating), be more practical?

It depends on the use case. I use mine for listening to talk radio in situations when I need to be able to hear traffic around me. For music listening indoors my Bose QC35 are much better.

The Airpods are really good as a phone headset, in contrast with the QC35s which are weird because you can't hear the full volume of your own voice when speaking.

My daughter swears by them, and she's tried a few things. Cans arent always appropriate in many settings.

I love mine. Use them every day at work, on breaks, going for a walk etc. The small case lives in my shirt pocket all day. I find them very comfortable and light, especially good when doing jobs around the house etc. I essentially forget I’m wearing them.
I wouldn’t buy second hand ones personally. 🤢

Cheers,
Joseph

They are great as far as comfort and portability goes. Sound is decent; not better nor worse than the wired ones.

[Subjectively] Sound quality(low end) can be improved w/ a cheap silicone cover(lots on Trademe).

Price is crap, true, but it serves it's purpose for me. I wish they would up the battery capacity a bit though.
