Wifi calling quality is mostly affected by the quality & usage of your Wifi and the broadband connection. Personally, I haven't really had any quality issues with VoWifi, but then again the nearest AP to us is about 100m away so I don't have a lot of interference to contend with. There was a known issue with iPhone that can cause one-way speech for inbound calls (on VoLTE too, not just VoWifi), but IIRC a patch was put into the IMS core to fix that a week or two ago.

2degrees internal calling has used wideband AMR for years now so there should not be a general issue with that.

I do sometimes get poor call quality to my wife, but that's because the Spark coverage is spotty out here. For the most part though, calls between 2degrees and Vodafone or Spark fall back to old-skool 8KHz 8-bit A-law and yes you will probably notice that.

Glad to hear its not just us that's thinking there is an issue. Will peruse with logs but I expect nothing will change.

Might need to put a business case together to see if we can get back onto Spark. How to word it?

The issue is not with WiFi calling as WiFi calling to another handset connected to WiFi calling the quality of the call is fantastic

2degrees calling on network sounds very clear

@SaltyNZ So is there anything that can be done at 2D to change this to using a 16bit codec with acceptable sound quality? This is the one thing that causes incredible grief, as my hearing is not what it used to be. Will things improve in cases like this when 2D has VoLTE covering the country?

Its not the 8 bit that's the problem, its some horrid lossy compression that is happening to it. Makes everything sound like a sock over the phone.

It is the 8-bit, really. AMR uses 14-bit samples. And the 8-bit samples are not compressed, but AMR is (and it is lossy).

Anyway, as previously stated TDM is being basically retired this year and I expect we'll go transcoder-free towards Spark & Vodafone when that happens.

You assume everyone can get 4G!! So many holes in the 2 degrees network.

WB-AMR is also used on 3G.

Its turning to normal 8bit when it hits the fixed phone network anyway, and its only some 2 degrees calls that sound like total arse, not all of them. There also seems to be some heavy noise gating happening on those calls as well.

Given Chorus has the green light to turn off copper anywhere they have fibre, fixed services using E1 only have a limited life left too I expect. Eventually I'd say that even people who stubbornly cling to VDSL because Chorus stubbornly refuse to provide fibre (no, not autobiographical at all, why do you ask?) would find their fixed service has turned into an IMS service that now goes analog at the DSLAM.

Well this is an ip phone system now but even on the old one on bri there were too many crap sounding mobile calls. The thing is it's fine when you get their voicemail, it's just the actual call over the air. All of them can't be explained away with a phone case on their phone or using bluetooth etc like seems to be the usual excuses given for muffled lossy audio.

I have also noticed this now connected to Wi-Fi calling at home / work and the call is going off-net to VodafoneNZ and it sounds like the end user on the Vodafone side has a sock over the handset

Turn off Wi-Fi calling and the call is much better quality

I have terrible audio also, mainly when I check my 2degrees voicemail, a lot of the time you can't make out most of the message but on calls as well sometimes.

Could be related to wifi calling as well as that's all I can use here at home/work since there's no cell signal.

I also have poor quality voice calls with 2 degrees. Especially around Wellington City. I’m locked in on a contract otherwise I would change.
