richms: Only benifit I can see with the dect inbuilt to the ATA is like with the vodafone one that is integrated - no massive delays from dial to connecting as it uses DTMF to dial.

DTMF means nothing. Is there isn't a correct dial plan every SIP device out there will wait until there the is a digit timeout before dialling.

maverick: Just a bit of marketing and good on them for this But a bit far fetched to say this is new... The hardware is the Bob boxes which is a a home hub with a dect unit that's the only difference to all the other VoIP routers on the market.

And definately nowhere as sexy as a Fritz! box with Fritz! DECT handset. I'd love to use these for a big new deployment but suspect people won't be interested when they see the price.

Do you know of anyone that has used one of these?
I was very keen at one point but was turned off by the cost and some reports of flaky behavior.

pretty much 'meh' from me, unless Orcon come out with some seriously good calling rates on it.

Entry level at $70 is pretty meaningless. Most ISPs offer around the $70 mark for entry level including a standard landline and Broadband anyway, so saying $70 is a good price point doesn;t tell you anything unless you know a) the calling prices and b) how much data you get.
Orcon offered $70 for 30GB plus a landline or 5GB (or was it 10?) plus free national calling in their 'best deal ever' thing not long ago, so unless this is better than that, what is the point?

Whereas a decent IP native device will start the sip session as soon as you hit the green button, the dect base and ATA will have to go offhook, wait for a bit, then dial the DTMFs really slowly out to the ATA - dialplan or not there is no way to avoid that delay in sending the digits across the analog connection. Also there will hopefully be immediate feedback on the handset for busy number like a mobile so you dont have to lift it to your ear and listen.

Not true - if you press the green button then dial dialplan makes a big difference.

Well who uses a cordless phone thatway? its always been dial and then press green on them? otherwise you break the redial and it will dial all the other crap you dial after it gets an answer too.

it's a bit lame considering Orcon already offer LL + BB for $81.95 or are they once again going to shove users onto other plans so they can dump older plans

Theres a number of these out there nowdays, the BT Home Hub, Audio codes have had them, Thomson etc, iinet did a good Job with these for there market, developed them selves etc, and have a good custy base in Aus using them.

I think my point was more around nothing new here, ove to see VoIP pushed to the forefront and marketing around this is alsways good... just seems to me tha some people like to overstate themselves, a plug a play combined router is not a new idea as you well know Steve,

Just seem that this bit of marketing is saying thats it new to NZ and it will change the world when all it is a new router and Orcon and deloying VoiP over DSL ... Dont let the truth get in the way of a good Story

Redial has no issues, no delay on the call going through. Uniden Dect -> Vodafone Router for VOIP.

Yeah, I'm not sure what RichMS is on about either. We also have Uniden cordless phones hooked into our ATA, and whether you dial before or after going off-hook, redial works perfectly. Also, when dialling a number from the phone book (as a speed dial), the tones are sent out to the ATA pretty fast. I would challenge anybody to dial them that fast with their fingers, so I don't really see the problem here.

You and me would be the only two people I know who use a cordless phone this way! Everybody else I know pushes the off hook button then dials the number.

Since about 2007, we have had naked cable from Telstraclear, which is now $55.95 per month for 20GB.

We also have one of the Netgear "skype phones" although this is slowly being supplanted by idevices.

The Wellington (04) skypein number costs about $100 per year.

I am not sure why this is being pitched as being so revolutionary?
