SalmonSalami: I just got connected to Snap. I couldn't be happier at the moment. I can watch youtube videos just fine and all my speeds are back to normal. The real test will come after 4pm though.

Let us know how Snap goes.
I am also thinking of switching. I believe everyone has their limits. And im about to reach mine.

Well after much disccussions with people in regards to the Consumer Gurantees Act, I sent a reply to Orcon and CC'd Upper Management.

To Orcon:
Hi Olly,
The Consumer Guarantee Act supersedes any contract where a remedy is sort due to a consumer paying for a service and not getting the service for which they agreed to pay for. From 8 July 2003, any services supplied to you by your electricity, gas, telephone, water company or internet service provider must meet the guarantees under the Act.

I agreed to pay Orcon for Broadband service. Due to a known issue with your International Bandwidth provisioning - due to not providing enough to the consumer - I am now getting Dial up Speeds for international content - this I did not agree to when I joined up with Orcon.

I seek a remedy to pay for dial up prices on my account, until such time you rectify the International Bandwidth issue.
I request that my correspondence urgently be forwarded on to Upper Management and I also would like to notify you that I am prepared to take this matter to Fair Go if I do not get my account discounted to a dial up pricing scheme until such time you rectify the International Bandwidth issue.

Also if my request under the Consumer Guarantees Act is not met I will also take my business over to another Internet Service Provider. I joined up as a customrer to your company in good faith. As a show of good faith to me - please discount my account until the problem has been resolved.

My husband and I look forward to coming home in the evenings and spending time together playing WoW. We've not been able to successfully do this since joining Orcon from Xtra. The game has latency of up to 15000ms and disconnects once the latency kicks in. It is unplayable. Gaming is why we pay for Broadband - we need high speed internet with an always on and continuous internet connection. I was very mislead in all my communications with your company stating "Orcon is the best" - if you were the best, I would be playing WOW right now and not corresponding with you.

Let's see if this gets a response.

God, I just went on to battlenet and getting myself dropped/lag all the time.
And I just remembered that few days ago I got the bill from orcon with $90.

And considering that I hadnt been able to game for the last 3 weeks.

This is now really getting to my nerves

Snap is looking very appealing to me now. Is it true that they say Snap is best for south islanders?

It's awesome so far. Gaming is sweet and I haven't dropped from any games yet. Youtube is sweet. Torrents are connecting, but not going that fast at this time of nightm but at least they go. Torrents didn't connect to trackers at all during peak on Orcon. I'm still to get interleaving turned off (should be done by tomorrow) so things should get slightly better.

Proof there's NOTHING wrong with my line, connection, or exhange. Orcon have admitted they're short of bandwidth so I don't think there's anything more to say about that. Finally back to normality. I might consider rejoining Orcon in the distant future, but Snap is fantastic at the moment. It took them a day to get everything sorted for me. I highly recommend them to anyone thinking of ditching Orcon.

Where do you live SalmonSalami?
How is Snap's latency compared to orcon?
I live in dunedin, so im thinking of joining snap. Snap can potentially give me a better latency as their server are closer to where i live (christchurch based right?)
Where as with orcon is auckland based, I get about 30ms more latency compared to my orcon peers.

I went around to a mates house last night who live in the same subdivision as me (he's also on the same exchange).
I downloaded quite a bit last night, proving (in my mind) that there is no such exchange congestion. I get back home to find stuff that I had left downloading still chugging away at ~16KB/s.
His connection seemed to vary between 110KB/s min and 435KB/s max.

That's the thing that is doing my head in. I am on the same exchange that I was on for Xtra (have not moved house) and the speeds are just tooo fluctuating on Orcon - it is not a consistant stream. This is only evenings and weekends. We have always played weekends and evenings on Xtra and had no exchange congestion. And it can't be exhange congestion if their unbunbled network has it's own equipment at the exchange.

So that to me means that it is their problem with their equipment. As I don't see any other international bandwidth issues complained about with any other ISP on these forums.

I don't understand how all this broadband provisioning works - so if they need more international bandwitdh from their gateway provider - surely in today's technical age - this can be done with the press of a button?

Why all the long delays?

Do they not have some sort of bandwidth assessment based on the demand from existing and new customers.

ie Shouldn't they with each new customer, gain more bandwidth to accomodate the increased number of traffic that would be used on their lines?

Yes I also agree, why the long delay?? In the past Orcon never failed to fix any issues more than a couple days.
This has been weeks now.

At least update us on whats happening.

I can’t pretend to begin to understand Orcons business but can only comment on what would make sense to me.

There would be no point in adding a slice of bandwidth per user. It would not only increase administration costs, but would be a royal pain in the *** to keep track of.
It would make more sense to add chunks per "x" users.

It would also make sense to average those users. So out of "x" users, a certain percent of them will be heavy downloader’s, a certain percent will be casual surfers/email downloader’s, a certain percent will be gamers..... you get the picture. So by applying some simple math to the stats that they will have gathered over the years, they can determine that instead of buying "x" users, times bandwidth = chunk, they can purchase "x" users averaged, times bandwidth = chunk (or average bandwidth required chunk).

I would guess that most ISP's do this. But like I said, I can only comment on what makes sense to me, both administratively and cost effectively.

Something to keep in mind and Duncan pointed to this earlier, you can’t account for human nature. What this means is, if there is an unexpected or unaccounted event that causes people to deviate from that average or norm, then the stats go out the window

Hmmm...the problem seems to be fixed for me atm (howick exchange)
finally able to syn at ADSL2+ speed...

download driver from nvidia, speed seems to be capped at 280kb/sec
but was able to download both itune/nvidia driver at 280kb/sec at the same time (i.e. 560kb/sec)
havent try to find out what is the max speed yet.

youtube video no longer need to pause and wait
and speedtest.net is getting pretty good result too.

Hopefully this will last.........thru the night...

Well I hope someone has luck. I've just been playing WoW and latecny was good. Now that it is getting closer to 5ish latency is getting worse - it just went in the red.

Was really hoping to play WoW tonight and over the weekend - but it does not look like it.

Was really hoping to play WoW tonight and over the weekend - but it does not look like it.

Have you tried lowerping.com? In theory I thought it wouldn't make a difference, but there are people earlier on this thread that said it made WoW playable for them despite the Orcon issues. Albeit a small extra cost.

EDIT: I found one of the comments about this:

Jekkyl: This is still happeneing for me, I am currently paying $8 a month US on top of my orcon fee so I can use my connection for any international gaming or ventrillo after 8pm. Logged a ticket but don't really expect to hear anything. Once my next Tunnel sub runs out if issues still arn't fixed I guess I will have to look elsewhere, i'm trying to give Orcon a chance but paying extra to another company tofix something thats not my issue is not my idea of good service.
