browsing on a 1mb/s connection is terrible. It actually feels like dial-up. Skype chat is fine, but calls are a totally different story.

I'm going to disagree right back at ya...

Even if it feels like dialup to you, most people (not saying you're one) don't know what dialup feels like, and of those that experienced, most can't remember it. I've owned a 300bps acoustic and a 1200/75 modem and I've been using the net since the late 80's. 1mbit/sec is quite reasonable to browse on, even today, and you'd be AMAZED at how low the bitrate is for a lot of stuff people seem to think uses lots of bandwidth.

What you probably don't have access to is a system which reports the average download speed of a number of popular websites around the world to an array of NZ based probes and which shows that you don't have to get too far offshore before the real world throughput in browsing is lower than 1mbps.

What I won't dispute is that ALONG WITH the slower than usual throughput there may be other issues which could impact the usability of some apps.

Browsing on a solid, stable 1mbit connection is fine. What I don't know is the full characteristics of the line and TCP behaviour that's occurring.

Yeah mine has drastically gone downhill in last month. In december I was getting 6Mbps now it is this:

In all seriousness, who decides what an acceptable speed during peak times on an unlimited plan?

You're presumably aware that 3mbit 24*7 is still about 1TB/month? And I'm sure at times of the day linux ISOs download a lot faster than 3mbit.

There are options in the market for fast all the time, and there are options for fast much of the time and congestion during peak use times... I think it's great we all have a choice. What's not so great is people expecting fast all the time with unlimited usage and expect to pay bottom dollar as well. That's unrealistic.

your guys speed issues are unlikely to have anything to do with Slingshot.
Why don't you get Slingshot to have a look at your issue?

I never have any speed issues, in fact I just did a speedtest.net and got 17Mb/s I think my line speed is only 15Mb/s

if they did actually have a policy to so heavily throttle speeds, though, you'd think that would be something they'd be expected to warn customers of in the fine print.

1. VOIP

2. Gaming

3. Browsing

4. Streaming

5. Local traffic

6. File sharing, including Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

Respectfully, I disagree. In all likelihood any issues are going to be cyclic as the userbase increases until a new chunk'O'bandwidth can be justified.

So many people in NZ seem to believe that ISPs can afford to provide huge amounts of data and speed, 24*7. For those that don't know what dedicated bandwidth actually costs, I invite you to go and get some prices for dedicated connection BANDWIDTH prices and then compare that to what you pay for your residential accounts.

As for warning customers - I am not even going to bother reading their contracts but if you can tell me they DON'T have clauses saying performance will be indeterminate and is not guaranteed, then I'm all ears.

Lowest speed I've seen on the plan is 8Mb/s

I'm happier than I was when I was on Telecom's equivalent "BigTime" plan. It appears it is managed far better.

Gaming is excellent. I have a ping of 5 to CS:S servers in New Zealand and 15 to 20 to Australian servers.
Browsing is fantastic! I've never had any issues streaming from the USA or YouTube
Steam downloads come down at line speed.
P2P applications work at line speed around the clock no matter what it seems.
Customer service takes a little while if you call after 5 or on a weekend, but when you get through you get a Kiwi that knows what he is talking about!

Mines hauling at the moment, torrents hitting 1.1MB/s all up and its not all cached, a real united nations of flags showing in utorrent.

For starters, I don't get kicked off an SSH session after a couple of minutes on an otherwise idle line. (By SSH I mean editing conf files, not SFTP or a tunnel.)
