Good you can still do the $10 upgrade and data hungry users have some big plans at long last.
Thanks Duncan.

I think this should be clearly stated. It's nowhere to be found!

It does state this clearly on the 'Broadband' page if you have entered your phone number and we determine you are eligible for the non-LLU plans. However, point taken that this could be clearer. I will make sure that this is more clear on the website. Thanks for the feedback.

Not really. I've gone through the signup wizard. Clicking into the 'view details' button only tells me the allowance (and that's it's upgradable), Homeline/Tolls (when applicable) and the overage. Nothing about speeds or any speed upgrade.

Put your phone number into the checker thing, then go here:

http://www.orcon.net.nz/broadband/

"Each plan comes standard with a download speed as fast as your line can go (up to 8Mbps) and an upload speed of up to 128kbps. You also have the option of upgrading your upload speed to as fast as your line will allow (up to 800kbps)."

Doesn't say anything about the cost of doing so though.

Duncan
- it's not very clear to the average person that to get most of the information about the plans, you need to put your phone number in. It just looks more like a line checker utility. IMO, it needs to be a bit clearer that you *really really should put your phone number in here*.

Perhaps some sort of popup layer on the Orcon@Home page (not window, because that's just eww) or something along those lines?

BTW - Why don't you speak to Mauricio about getting an Orcon forum created here? Even the evil we-don't-care-about-customers Slingshot have one!

Ohh...

That method to find out about the speed is completely ridicuous though, as not many people will go back into the Broadband page to find that out, and still doesn't state anything about the speed upgrade.

Thanks Will, feedback about clarity definitely taken on board. Will have that improved. Thanks guys.

Will definitely have a chat to Mauricio about an Orcon forum.

Lol, a little OT but I'll answer it all the same:

Vodafone made the business decision to wait until they had a bigger coverage area before releasing a commercial product. They've been testing their stuff at the exchanges for the same length of time Orcon has, and with any luck they've been successful trials. Orcon made the decision to get a product out to market ASAP, and gradually increase coverage over time.

Both decisions are perfectly fine - not all companies like to run themselves the same way, and I'm sure they'll have their reasons for making the decisions that they do.

It's great to see that real competition is finally starting to appear - hopefully we'll see some really exciting stuff happen over the next year or so.

EDIT: Damn it, Paul beat me to it! (don't you ever sleep/go home Mr. ex-OBEP?)

Sorry Paul, I just don't understand why you felt the need to post that media release in this particular thread. Thought it may be more appropiate elsewhere - the Vodafone forum for instance

The truth never sleeps but PR stays up late... Cool

But Will is dead right. The thing with LLU is we finally all get to make our own decisions and chose our own business models. If Orcon has one business model and Vodafone another (and the rest of the industry something else) then that's a Good Thing and we should encourage it. Differentiate! I for one welcome our etc overlords.

Cheers

Paul

Because someone asked for the status of other providers launching similar services.

andysh: Does anyone have any information about any other ISP that are looking to do the same thing in the near future?

PaulBrislen: Well, I did have a press release ready to go out today [...] it has detail around Vodafone's plans.

However, noone asked you to make unsubstantiated comments against Vodafone - I could ask the same, why did you chose to paste that in this thread, "rather than in the Vodafone forum"?

Anyway ... let's get back on topic Cool

simple really. Last time I started a thread with a press release it was deemed so offensive I was royally told off for DARING to do such a thing... so I don't. I post where someone asks.

Or have you all changed the rules again?Innocent

Cheers
