From Orcon's new website:

The Next Generation Is Here!

Freedom at last - New Zealand telecommunications is finally being freed up to true competition. And we say, "About time"! Orcon is getting things moving by installing our own equipment in telephone exchanges as part of the local loop unbundling process.

We welcome you to join us on our Next Generation Network and enjoy our great value, excellent service, and impeccable style as we take some massive leaps forward.

http://www.orcon.net.nz/orconathome/

Plans:

Purple+ - 10GB data, no homeline, $79.95 per month
Gold+ - 10GB data, with homeline (unlimited national calling - calls up to 1 hour in length), $99.95 per month
Platinum+ - 25GB data, with homeline (same as above), including rent of "Orcon Homehub", $119.95 per month

Additional data is just $1 per GB - a nice change from the $10 per 5GB on their standard DSL plans.

Orcon Homehub

If you really want to get the most from any Orcon@Home or Orcon@Home+ plan, go for the amazing Orcon Homehub. This sleek wireless router lets you access your Broadband from anywhere in your house without plugs or cables.

What's more, because our network can talk to it, our helpdesk can easily support the device remotely to get you back online faster if there is ever a problem.

In the future, we'll be teaching the Homehub some cool new tricks to give you an even better Orcon experience through new and interesting services, so stay tuned...

If you sign up to the Orcon@Home Platinum+ plan, the Orcon Homehub is included as part of the package. On all other plans you can rent the Homehub for just $5 per month.

I wonder if they'll murder me for opening it up and taking a look Wink

Apparently there are also data blocks, this doesn't appear to be on the site yet, and I don't know if this is instead of the $1 per GB or if you can pick and choose... but the pricing is apparently:

$20 for additional 25GB
$40 for additional 50GB
$60 for additional 100GB.

EDIT:

Ok it seems to only be on the signup page - you can choose to add the above data blocks to your plan each month, or keep it at the basic plan (10GB or 25GB). You get charged $1 per GB over your allowance:

That's pretty sweet, since it includes (I assume 'unlimited') national calling and the nominated international country deals.

Kinda wary of the remote access and rental (wtf?) on the Orcon Homehub though... Undecided   Do I really want you poking around the settings of the ADSL wireless router?

Expecting a long wait for ADSL2+ rollout in other provinces.  *sigh*

Haha yes, some helpdesk employees for several ISP's .. I think I'd rather poke around in my own router than have them touching it thank you very much Wink. The rental idea seems like an interesting concept -- better than outright purchasing a $250+ wireless router for some people I guess. Especially for less technically able people, they can just call the helpdesk and get their problems sorted remotely (in theory...)

Wonder if this is running on the same hardware as BT's HomeHub - I suspect so or something pretty similar.

From their web site:

Orcon?s next generation network currently covers 5 telephone exchanges in the Auckland area; Ponsonby, Mt Albert, Browns Bay, Ellerslie, and Glenfield.
If this is not yet available to you, don?t worry! We?ll be bringing our services to more Auckland exchanges throughout 2008.

So, for anyone outside of Auckland this is not newsworthy. At least not yet.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Not the best prices for entry level stuff but tons of data is cheap and it's only $1 per GB! but maybe the network speeds will be unmatchable and reliable? could be a winner or could be a big flop, I wonder if the provided line is POTS or VoIP?

I have had a few issues with orcon tolls more than anything, asides from a couple of slow periods the internet has been quite reliable.

I understand it's presented to the customer as just a standard POTS line, but is delivered over the copper directly from their FXS gear at the exchange, which in turn is connected to their softswitch over VoIP.

So basically an VoIP ATA linecard in the exchange that shunts down the existing lines?
