Sounds like they've withdrawn the 'beta' upgrade with a new 'trial' version coming this week (from facebook.com/huaweidevice) - In response to your feedback regarding technical difficulties with the trial version of the X5 Gingerbread upgrade, we are discontinuing its availability. We apologize for this inconvenience. An improved trial version will be released next Thursday on the Huawei Device website. Personally I've been very happy with the upgrade, apart from the phone crashing when I tried to turn wifi on (only tried once).
The improvements I've noticed - - new version of swype is much better; seems faster and the annoying bugs (mostly re entering numbers) have been fixed - touch UI is more responsive and the graphics snappier - startup is REALLY fast - comes with Huawei device system/app backup software - all the gingerbread tweaks...
Quite a few people have bricked their phones with it which is why it was withdrawn, including most of the Miui developers and Genokolar who's developing an unofficial CM7 port.........doh!
Instructions were a little convoluted but I managed to update with no dramas. Is a vast improvement over 2.2 and arguably better than the custom roms that are available

Second update worked well and the there are lots of software improvements, however she is still finding she has very poor battery life (Of around 8 hours max, moderate usage) even with a brand new (OEM) replacement battery.

Same with my GFs (seems lots of GFs have this phone....) in terms of battery life. Terrible. Have not upgraded as yet as hoping 2dsgrees will bring out an update soon.
On oxygen 2.3.7 the wife was getting a solid day to day and a half, the phone hasn't been properly used since I updated to huawei 2.3.5 but is sitting with an active sim and wifi on etc and I'm getting battery drain of around 2% per hr including me playing with it ooccassionally. 24 ~ 36hrs of normal use should be easily achieved.
I suspect battery calibration could be the cause of your issue

Charge the phone to 100% and delete the battery stats file.
To delete the battery stats file you can use an app aptly called 'Battery Calibration' on a rooted phone. You can also delete battery stats via CWM recovery, which is probably the best way of doing it.
