Has anyone heard anything about this? Would love to find out if 2degrees are going to upgrade this!!

There was a tweet from Huawei a while ago which said October from memory. Of course that doesn't mean 2 degrees will roll it out then. I am running gingerbread from XDA (Cyanogenmod) and it is very stable on the X5. It has only just got there in recent weeks however. I was even confident enough in it to put it on the wife's X5 today.

Very easy process to upgrade it. It took me about 15 minutes.

I put MIUI on the wifes X5 which is based on 2.3.5 and it works well, battery life literally doubled

OK. Here goes.

The upgrade process I used was:

Grab the following files from XDA threads:

New Kernal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166560

New Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130524

You may need Google Apps from here (at least for Cyanogen you do): http://code.google.com/p/u8800-cm7/downloads/list

One of the ROMs from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1123

CyanogenMod: Has loads of tweaks but development is a bit slower than MIUI or Oxygen. It has gingerbread VOIP included which is why I use it.

MIUI: iphone themed gingerbread :-)

Oxygen: Very stripped down clean version of Gingerbread.

Note: None of the Gingerbread roms support native wifi tether so if you need infrastructure tether you will need to stick with FROYO for now.

Move as many of your application as you can/like to the SD card prior to upgrading.

Obtain root access via Z4Root from the market if you already haven’t
Backup if you like using Titanium Backup from the market.
Copy the ROM Zip file and the kernel file to your SD card on the phone.
Shutdown the phone.
Connect the USB cable to your phone and computer.
Hold down volume up and down buttons (both volume buttons down) and press the power button. The screen should go purple to show you are in bootloader mode.
Your PC should detect and display a USB drive which has a folder called IMAGE
On your PC navigate to the IMAGE folder and copy the file recovery.img from your phone to the PC (backup the file somewhere).
Copy Recovery file you downloaded above over top of the existing recovery.img file on your phone.
Disconnect the phone and remove the battery to leave bootloader mode.
Connect back to the PC and hold down the “VOL UP” key and power key on the phone to enter recovery. You should at this point have a display on the phone with black background and orange writing and a bunch of options.
Navigate to “Apply ZIP from SD card” using volume keys and the power key to select. The back key on the base of the phone will get you back up menus.
Apply the new kernel ZIP.
Apply the ROM zip using the same method.
Apply the google apps zip using the same method (I am not sure if MIUI or Oxygen need google apps, check the thread)
At the main recovery menu you will see an option to clear the cache. Do this.
Also under advanced you have to clear the DALVIK cache.
Reboot to system.
Go through the google apps setup.
With Cyanogen I got errors with force closes on MEDIA after first boot. To clear this error, go to SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS -> DOWNLOAD MANAGER and select CLEAR DATA,

That should be it. Good luck.

Out of curiosity, and asking quite generally, is there much work for the Telco in releasing Android updates for their handsets?

It software customisation etc needed, or is it more around testing for compatibility with the network?

Hi,

Internally we need to retest the handset which takes time but generally not too much work – the hard work is on the Vendors end as they have to ensure chipset, display drivers etc compatibility, integrate any of their customizations and then get reapproved by Google.

There is also regional/OPCO customization required which is why there can be different release cycles for the same handsets across different networks.

Is there any chance that 2Degrees could publish the stock ROM zip file on the support website as Huawei in their wisdom have broken all the links that were working?

The latest 2D firmware was on the Huawei Device website but now they've tried to adopt some fancy login page and have stuffed it up!

It'd be great to have the stock ROM to revert back to in the event that the official Gingerbread release ever came out as an OTA update.

That'd be great if you could, I'm using Miui and it's great but to have the stock ROM to fall back on would be a good idea

I've had Oxygen, Miui, CM7 Beta, and stock Rom all on my X5, my favourite has to have been the Miui Rom, battery life seemed improved and I loved the layout etc. Unfortunately the wifi hotspot wouldn't work for me continually so reverted back to stock so I can use a stable hotspot. Might check some other updated versions of one's I have already tried in the coming weeks. I just can't stand the stock rom layout but it is very stable and the features all work - Although the battery seems to disappear rather quickly.
