the traceroute isn't as bad as the packet loss to that host, which of course is hard to monitor because they filter icmp, but if you do a tcpdump you'll see a lot of retransmissions. it's cogent->at&t being saturated, and it seems cogent are now sending to at&t much further out. if at all possible to change at&t bgp path to not go out via cogent would probably be a lot better. (battle net is on another AS after some of the other traffic, but it's still single homed at&t.. )
on that note, it seems cogent are up to having peering issues with verizon, at&t, and comcast now. all simultaneously. afaik it's mostly about cogent hosting netflix.
the cogent->at&t dispute is pretty big, it seems they're congesting in los angeles, and chicago, and this path looks like dallas...
Depressing isn't it.
Will have a play in the morning, see if I can get the AT&T traffic to go via Level3.
Rambaldi: Still paying 220ish a month on the 1TB plan that Orcon no longer offer, because I don't like how shady the all you can eat plan sounds in the fine print, with the whole we can charge you more if you download too much, without saying how much too much is.
Rambaldi: In the past it's been that Orcon runs out of International Bandwidth, so they slow everything down for a few weeks while they pretend they haven't run out. Then they order more then everything is fine at night again for a good few months but hardly ever admit to doing anything to fix the problem and act like we were all imaging it. It's happened in a circle so many times that I normally don't bother saying anything, I just wait and it gets fixed.

how'd that go? at least us.battle.net seems to still be routing via cogent, and the kansas/dallas detour.. i suppose at least it's not going via chicago atm.
and i dunno what to think of it really. it's kind of like telecom routing to therir own mail servers in australia via singapore because they didn't want to peer with vocus. then blaming the singapore cable cut on email problems. (even though it's a reasonably common occurance around there)

You would never get "charged" more. You might get told to calm it down a bit. But in saying that we have customers downloading TB+ and have told no one to calm down yet.

Things are a lot different with the new management. The new owners have made it clear that bandwidth is king and we need to make sure we have ample at all times.
I have fully admitted in previous posts about being a bit congestion on Aussie routers (and we are working hard to resolve them), but USA routes have a lot of spare bandwidth. A huge amount of capacity has been added in the past months.

have I really been sticking to this plan and paying all this extra money for... nothing :( ? If I should be switching over can I do that with you in private messages or do I need to call them on the phone?

I was basing that on your fair use policy line here Orcon may (in its sole discretion): · apply charges to your account for the excessive and/or unreasonable element of your usage
Everytime I've tried to find out on the phone how much is excessive or roughly how much is okay, I've been told no comment basically. With my 1TB plan I have only 2-3 times gone over 800gb, usually its more like 500-700gb... have I really been sticking to this plan and paying all this extra money for... nothing :( ? If I should be switching over can I do that with you in private messages or do I need to call them on the phone?
Didn't mean to sound like I hated Orcon or anything in my previous comment, if I did, I wouldn't be with them. The only really good answers or experiences I've had with Orcon have been when you answer something as the phone service is non existent.
