So - what about just downloading email; has this topic discussed that, too ?
I am trying to download my email while I am in Melbourne but this week it has been slower-than-slow = dribble.net more like it.
You can just imagine the disparaging comments my Aussie friends make about '3rd world little ole Noo Zilland' as a result.
Is Orcon 'throttling' email being downloaded overseas, too ?!
It doesn't look like throttle as the data trasmission is totally hap-hazard and fragmented = NOT any continuous stream, according to my traffic monitor programs.

I'm playing Warhammer Online too, but Orcon's peak time performance is very laggy. I get disconnected so much it's not funny. Playing other times in the morning and afternoon is fine. I'm on the Zeroshock plan, but Online gaming is not very bandwidth heavy.

Logged tickets to Orcon, very slow response and not getting anywhere ...

pyronical: For those of you who are looking playing Warhammer Online and are worried about Orcon's international performance, here is promising trace route to the Australian based (Darklands) server:

Tracing route to ea-mel-gw.aspac.customer.alter.net [221.133.202.162]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 24 ms 24 ms 23 ms 60.234.8.201
3 24 ms 24 ms 22 ms ge-0-0-4-0.cre1.nct.orcon.net.nz [121.98.9.1]
4 26 ms 46 ms 23 ms ge-1-3-0-200.cr2.nct.orcon.net.nz [60.234.9.4]
5 24 ms 24 ms 26 ms 203.21.31.121
6 24 ms 24 ms 24 ms so-3-0-0.XR2.AKL1.ALTER.NET [210.80.38.149]
7 39 ms 39 ms 39 ms 0.ge-7-1-0.XT4.SYD2.Alter.Net [210.80.34.62]

10 51 ms 51 ms 51 ms ea-mel-gw.aspac.customer.alter.net [221.133.202.162]

This was done during peak time on my Orcon LLU/ADSL2+ plan.

Forgot to mention with World of Warcraft and Ventrilo, the lag and disconnects only happen during peak time, daytime, afternoon and very late at night are fine. Basically when traffic is shaped, gaming/vent go to the toilet.

Yeah I have a suspicion that Orcon is doing that, but pretty sucks that online gaming is affected. Orcon first line support is pretty much clueless when I tell them about this. Not having a great Orcon internet experience at all ...

For what it's worth I thought I'd add that my contact with Orcon support thus far on my speed issues (other than the de-prioritisation thing) is actually very good.

You need to talk to corporate support, I found them to be great! They knew what I was talking about and pretty much made the first line of customer support look like supermarket clerks...

Done, multiple times, the engineers are away that the traffic is being affected by de-prioritisation, but for the last 6+ months haven't been able to get the system to tell the difference between that and p2p traffic. The only reason this got fixed last time, is because they ordered much more international bandwidth as a band-aid for the problem. Now that Orcon don't have enough international bandwidth again, the problem has come back.

Orcon for gaming sux. I'm getting that much delay I'm at a disadvantage against other players. I'm about to sign up with a new ISP once I've decided on which one. I want an ISP that does International gaming without lag, delay latency. I want an ISP with Home Phoneline, Tolls and a Max/Max Broadband plan without Orcon traffic management!!!!! Who is the best ISP for this?

If you want one company to do them all, there are only a handful:
  • Telecom
  • Vodafone
  • TelstraClear
  • Slingshot
  • Snap
  • Compass
Traffic management is hard to consider into though.

New Zealand Connections has both telephone and Internet plans.
