Back to the orcon genius..... Can it have other sip clients internally slaved off it and offer _any_ pabx capabilities? The sipura 9000 is a great concept for small households etc, its only problem is that it is a complete @$$ of an implimentation that keeps breaking. I can use mine as an ATA and thats about it, but if the genius was to allow you to have other devices internally off it then it might have a small chance of deserving the name...

Beccara: I'm pretty sure there is a hiQ in there someone as Telstra got a ex NSN engineer on its payroll for its IPC stuff, but this was 3 years ago now so perhaps thats changed

Beccara sorry I really think your way of base here, TCL have had a Broadsoft solution for almost 9 years they have it Marketed as Next-IP, willing to bet the house on that one ... Wink,

Any idea what they have been doing with it for the last 9 years? :)

I guess it is only a couple of days before the full details are released, but can anyone take a guess at what [3] is all about and how it works? Is it a kind of NAS lite thing? or some kind of online backup service?

"Orcon Genius features a range of innovative functions such as
[1] one that sends your voicemail as an audio file to your email address.
[2] Users can also charge USB-powered cell phones and MP3 players,
[3] and use it as central place to back-up files to an external hard drive"

P.s: imho it would be Genius if they provide a $5 per month option to rent a small UPS to keep the phone service going in the event of power failure. Unfortunately it is also my guess the optional takeup would be too small to justify it on a commercial level. But here's hoping.

it's probably just got a USB port like many modem/routers have that can be used either for 3G backup, charging devices, or (in th case of [3]) for attaching a hard drive.

Ive got an Orcon BobLite in front of me now, (pretty much same as the Bob2 except no built in phone/answer service)

Has two USB - one on the rear for charging/storage, and a compartment underneath with another USB for 3G connectivity (vodem etc)

They have a basic HTTP and FTP server built in also.

Heres some shots of the BobLite setup etc - from what i know the Bob2 is exactly the same (maybe apart from one or two changes for the answerphone ?)

Excellent, it is a lite nas with additional options to serve externally via ftp, and an option to serve a website from the same drive.

Thanks for the screen shots.

With the BobLite can you setup proper internal DNS with host name look up. One issue I have with all the other ADSL wireless routers is internal DNS for fixed IPs is broken so I end up using OpenWRT or dd-wrt.

For example I have about 5 hostnames mapped onto a single IP address for my home server so I can do website testing etc.

According to NBR, Orcon is purchasing Bob2 from iiNet (Australia). Bob2 documentation. (xpd's screens for the bob1 are more informative tho)

Orcons offering in my view is aimed more at your standard consumer who dosent know/want to know how to configure ATA's, setup VoIP systems etc.

Yes Xnet etc have been round longer offering similar service but not in a nice "plug this in and thats it" package.

Also Orcons offerings are brilliant for people in my situation (outside Auckland calling area...), where Ive been paying $110 for some data and the ability to call Auckland without worrying about how much its going to cost me. Now Im going to be saving $40 a month and keeping my "free" calls nationwide.

I honestly dont see why Xnet/2Talk users are so damned insistent Orcons offering is rubbish.

If that is the case, what is the point? the caling rates are hardly any cheaper than normal landline (whihc one would think is the whole point of VOIP),  and the package price and included data is identical to their 'best deal ever' which went around 6 months ago.

I know the pricing is only just out, but has anyone actually used this service yet? I'm keen to hear some real user experience/feedback, interesting tho all the debate about whether this stuff is revolutionary or old hat is!

I'm certainly interested in saving a good ~$40/mth. Not so happy about the $149 or $199 Early Termination fees if you  go on contract, given the high rate of turnover of technology and services we will see in the next 2 years. Might be less risky to go with the $99 new connection fee instead, but ultimately you do pay more if you stick with them for more than a year. I can understand this commercially, just not sure I can lock myself in that long at this point in time.

If I was in a postition to want a phone I cant take out with me, then I would consider it had I not already got a crapload of ATAs and phones already.

The buyout fee is minimal compared to the savings on paying for telecoms obsolete product. 5 months worth at the $40 saving, less if you have services that telecom rip you off on like caller ID which IMO should be free nowdays.

if it sucks and they cant make it work, the contract duration is meaningless. If it works by month 5 you are where you would be if you stayed with telecom. month 6 you can cancel and still save.

The biggest concern I have with these is that there is a lockin on toll provider, with not very appealing rates to be honest. Why do other telcos get away with forcing you to use their toll service but telecom have to let you choose?
