Duncan, great to see you posting here.

Will your VOIP offering permit the connecting of any SIP device? I'm keen to find a reliable NZ-based VOIP solution that will enable me to connect using the Nokia VOIP stack offered in many of the higher end Symbian phones.

Hey Duncan was wondering if Orcon will be offering say 5 email aliases(free) as the likes of xtra offer, as I like having the one for each family member & business, or will we be required to go the "Mailplus" email with your own domain?

Also :) here is my modem "stuff"

Would i experience greater download speeds if i crossed to your network as i'm assuming my upload is speed limitied here?

Currently with Xtra

Thanks in advance

Xtra actually offer 10 'sub accounts' with 2GB email storage (with 'no limit' for the primarily account) now days...

Awesome thanks for the reply guys - much appreciated

Duncan maybe thats another thing that could be made more obvious on the site as all i could see for more aliases was getting one through the MailPlus.

Cheers

Are wholesaled plans still available on exchanges that you have unbundled? My sister is with orcon and needs more upstream, and the new plans only list the LLU ones when you put the phone number in. No interest in changing pstn to orcon since telecom freedom is saving about $90-150 a month in mobile calls.

I wont go into too much detail here, but in short yes. We will not prohibit any SIP device connecting, however for practical reasons it is likely that we will only support a limited number of network approved devices. So provided you have the knowledge to get up and running with little help (we will publish settings, but not device specific) you can use whichever device you like.

I would just add the disclaimer that you should check out the final product spec once it has launched - unlikely to change from the above though.

On those exchanges that we have unbundled we will no longer be offering new wholesale connections. Currently those existing Orcon customers inside unbundled exchange areas who are already on a wholesale plan can stay on it - but we are not signing up any new customers in these areas on Wholesale connections. Why? Because the LLU (+) plans are awesome :)

However, if your sister is an existing customer and wants to upgrade her upstream (and doesn't want to change to the LLU plans) I am sure that we can arrange it. Message me if you need help with this.

JohndNZ:

~JohnD's modem stuff~

I want to avoid getting into specific "will I go faster" conversations for a couple of reasons:
  1. It is very difficult (near impossible) to come up with an accurate idea of whether or not we can get you a better sync speed because of all the different variables in play e.g. modem, distance from the exchange, quality of the copper in the ground, quality of the internal wiring etc...
  2. Even if I could do it, there are a lot of people on this forum, figuring out if they would all go faster would be a full time job - proabably for many people
What I can say is that even if we are unable to boost your sync rate (reported connection speed) which we are reasonably confident we can, all our trial users on our LLU network have experienced improved real world performance. What this means is that the actual speed at which you download stuff from/upload stuff to the internet will be better than it is currently.

This is because of the amount of bandwidth we dimension per user on our network.

I hope that this helps.

Are there any plans to offer ADSL2plus Annex M? This allows for up to 3.5Mbps upstream, and from what I can tell, isn't a problem under TNZ spectrum management.

I'm surprised neither Orcon or Vodafone have jumped on it...

ADSL2plus Annex M sounds good but not sure if it will be allowed by Telecom's specs due to potential for interferance with other customers, and Telstra also blocked it for a while in Australia until finally allowing it. In reality the faster upstream speed would only be likely to increase the near-end crosstalk within the exchange, so hopefully the CAT3 cables feeding ADSL equipment at the exchange would be sufficient to prevent such problems. If not, the upstream sync speeds should still find a stable equilibrium.

Also, can anyone advise if Orcon and ihug are both negotiating with the other ISPs? Im sure everyone will be keen on having some more flexible wholesale systems that can use Gigabit backhaul instead of Telecom's ATM network at 32kbps per user...

Time to find a new industry!

From what I've seen of the spectrum management plan, there is no problem with Annex M.

I'm sure they are negotiating with other ISPs; however Telecom already offer UBS and Basic UBA over Gigabit Ethernet, and will offer Enhanced UBA over GE as well.

Orcon

It's a pity you can't actually get the new plan even if you live in the area which is currently unbundled.
I moved from Torbay to Browns Bay in February (where I had one of the original Orcon Broadband plans) and orginally made enquires to Orcon about moving on or about the 20th of February. It took Orcon so long to get the correct information from me (example: asking me my home phone number 3 times in the same telephone conversation, when the 'customer service' person had called me on that number - twice) that I had to take one of the new plans. I was disgusted by the service by that time, but thinking the new plan would be so much better, I agreed. That was the date of release of the new plans.
Last week we received an email from Orcon, telling us we would be connected by the 31st of March. When we enquired on Wednesday this week, we were told yesterday that road cabling needed to be laid. Meanwhile I have had 7 weeks without internet and have been paying for it.
I have now asked for a manager to contact me from Orcon and have heard nothing other than this delightful email I received this morning:

"Hi Oh no, looks like we have a problem with your Orcon Broadband request (order # 101152). We have tried to put through your request but it seems that broadband is really popular in your area so your exchange full. What are we talking about? Your exchange (the device that your phone and broadband gets connected to) is very similar to a car park. For example if you go down to the local supermarket and when you got there you found all the car parks where full. So to get a car park you would have to wait for a car park to become free (e.g. for a person to leave), or you would have to wait for the supermarket to upgrade the car park by building more parking spaces. What do parking lots and supermarkets have to do with your Broadband? Your exchange is similar to a parking lot in that it only has a certain number of ports (e.g. spaces) and when those ports are full you either have to wait for someone to cancel their broadband (leave), or for the exchange to be upgraded with more ports (e.g. more space built). The good news is that we are slightly more civilised than a car park and we have put you on a waiting list. What will happen is that we will monitor the exchange for you and when a port becomes free we will contact you. The bad news is that we are not sure when a space will open, but we will contact you when it does. So hold tight and as soon as a port is available we'll jump on it and get you connected! The Orcon Team"

So far, all my complaints and concerns with Orcon's service have been completely ignored.
This forum is my last resort in getting my frustrations heard by them.
After today I will no longer be an Orcon Customer.
Who would have thought that Orcon's service would end up being worse than Telecom's?

Why does Orcon advertise and force you into a service you cannot use?
