Was having 5k pings to sydney based ventrillo tonight, bad lag spikes to world of warcraft still.

Its like Im in the game and can't do anything just stand there then everyone else speeds up to where they should be and ping shoots up in game to 1500ms, then doprs again for a minute.

I will be changing back to Telecom tomorrow

Well according to Orcon, this is because Telecom exchanges are overloaded so... changing back to Telecom won't fix things, from what I understand anyway.

As I understood it, it's more that each ISP has to work out something with Telecom Wholesale (which is separate from Xtra, again in so far as I understand) when a link is overloaded.

But yes, the prime time lag is getting gradually worse to the point of the connection being virtually useless 4pm/5pm - 10pm/11pm, with the winter weather bringing more people indoors I imagine.

From the sounds of it a few other ISP's have had better luck getting it sorted, though. Was thinking about Xnet myself.

Exchange/Cabinet > Backhaul > Handover Links > ISP Network

Orcon have said it's the handover links that are congested, which means changing ISP may indeed resolve the issue.

The congestion is actually in the Telecom network, so it should be affecting all Telecom Wholesale customer.

TBY-RAN is overloaded.

Are you sure about that?

I'm off the Torbay exchange on wholesale equipment, ISAM-09 I believe last time I checked which incidently is also in the same building as the 'RAN' where I believe they typically use a Juniper ERX1440 as the aggregation switch for the alcatel 7450's which in turn aggregate the various ISAMS.

I honetly cannot say that I've seen any degraded connectivity at all at any time of the day/evening/night.
Also why is your DSL hand-over comming from the TBY RAN? Surly you would be connected off Northcote or Glenfield? Or do you have handover(s) at multiple locations?

If you would like me to do any testing for you, please let me know! Sounds like you may be getting shafted!

Our handover is off GLF

We have had confirmation that its effecting the TBY-RAN. Possibly its only for traffic going TBY -> GLF.

Do you have an approximate timeline as to when this problem might be fixed, or at least improved upon ? I'd love to be able to tell my WoW guild approximately when I'll be able to raid properly again.

Just heard from Telecom they are putting in a work around this afternoon. So it should be better tonight.

Will let you guys know when I hear more.

When telecom built their DSL network it was low grade so they didn't loose customers from their frame, ISDN and ATM networks, so I guess we are left with this legacy, a load of junk.

Sure if you ignore the ~$3 million per day they are spending on installing cabinets with x Gbit fibre backhaul and improving exchange backhaul.....

Thats why we built our own LLU network :)

I think it's fair to say if it weren't for the LLU, telecom would still enjoy it's healthy super normal profit till this day.

all in all, any sort of investments (housing aside) are definitely good for NZ, now we just need more than one southern cross cables......
