Anyone else finding Orcon unbearably slow today? Based in Wellington & speeds have dropped to medieval levels - like 0.5 Mb/s

Yes. Not unbearably slow though. Down to 2.6mb in Ellerslie, Auckland. Normally about twice as fast.

If that is the state of the internet in New Zealand then things are worse than I thought.

Yuuup, also really slow for me today, and a bit janky over the last few days too (see Intl issues thread).
I figured public holiday was the cause too.

Where do you guys feel the bottleneck is? I read many years ago that 'backhaul' was the bottleneck and would only get worse in future. I guess I don't properly understand what that is, but I felt it sat somewhere in the middle of the infrastructure like an hourglass. So whilst the client end gets bigger (More subscribers plus vdsl/fibre upgrades) and the international pipe gets bigger (upgrades, plus the proposed new cable), we will still get slowdowns as long as everyone is competing for bandwidth at the same time.

Did I understand that right? And if it's true, is there something Orcon can do to improve it?

Part of the problem where I am I believe relates to our local cabinets. They haven't been upgraded and in fact I think we're on temporary hardware as we're in a new subdivision and didn't get connectivity for months (required lots of complaining). We get speeds of around 3mb/s whereas neighbours who have been here longer (and presumably on the existing hardware) get around 6mb/s.

Also the newer houses have more problems with the phonelines - crossed lines, no dialtone from time to time (doesn't affect the older houses). Of course Telecom/Chorus claim that these things 'just happen'.

I mentioned this in another post somewhere.... what I think is happening (and Im most likely miles off course ;) ), is that Orcon have a rotating pool of IPs that block torrents for peak times for the users that end up in that pool.

When i noticed it, others were running fine but not myself and couple of other users... next night we were all fine again. But last night I noticed it happening again.

Or Orcon are just blocking torrents for all at peak times and we have to live with it.... which i can.

Very off course :)

Orcon uses P2P Caches (PeerApps). If the torrent is in the cache, it will be served from the cache. If its not in the cache it follows Orcons traffic management policies.

The PeerApps don't support encrypted P2P, so any encrypted sessions will always be effected by traffic management.

My Orcon connection has been terrible for last week, (Auckland Waterview).

In the evening I'm down to 0.5 M/bits  = Absoloute shocker.

Have contacted Orcon to sort it or reduce my invoices, not paying for dial up on a B/Band connection.

Will post line stats when I figure out how the hell to do that.

As for intermittent.....I'd say consistent, I'd bet my mortgage that it will be dead slow again tonight when I get back from work.
