coffeebaron: Ok so I can't ask when VoLTE is likey coming; but I'm sure I'm allowed to ask when the first RBI2 towers are suppose to start building?

You can ask either. :-)

In the first case I can't answer because it's not public information and it's not something you could reasonably figure out just from knowing how things work. So, all I can say is that yes, VoLTE is coming because of course it is. I can also tell you it's coming to Spark and Vodafone at some point.

In the second case, I don't actually know. I wouldn't expect it to be soon, though, because the process of building a site has a long lead time - you've got to scope your potential sites including on-site surveys and then get all the leases worked out before you can even get to the consent stage. But that's for a regular site. In this case, the RBI2 project is a joint venture between all three networks so we all have to have RAN software upgrades to support the standard that allows a site to be shared. The shared sites aren't just three sets of equipment on the same pole - it is actually a single set of equipment broadcasting three networks simultaneously.

It's possible a few might get to construction stage by late next year I guess.

Wasn't the intent to have RBI2/UFB2+ etc. all done by end of 2022? So will be a busy three years assuming these don't really get in to full swing until say 2019. Obviously some sites will be harder to get underway than others, but I would have though that in putting their proposal together they would have at least got some sites on their fast track so they could get the project underway sooner rather than later.

Also what happened to all the extra site builds that were suppose to be happening as part of buying the 700 spectrum?

Once the actual build of a site commences it's usually pretty quick. So although it might not seem like anything is happening on the RBI2 front for quite some time, once they start popping up, they'll get a lot of them done in a relatively short space. Some will be quicker than others - I imagine the ones that are only accessible by helicopter for heavy lifting take a bit longer.

In any case, yes,  this is definitely the way to have it done quicker: the RAN upgrades can be done in parallel with the planning so that doesn't really slow it down, and with only one lot of planning and one lot of equipment, the cost is vastly lowered and the service improved because nobody has to settle for a sub-par location or pole height due to someone else having already locked up the best ones.

Also, this is not really related to the 700 spectrum site builds. All three carriers are already doing that irrespective of RBI2. The RBI2 sites will be 700, though.

At home (near Muriwai) my reception is terrible/non existent unless I stand my phone up in one window. Wifi calling has really helped out with this issue although the call quality isn't necessarily great with digital distortions and drop-outs.

My issue is related to wifi calling taking precedence over regular calling when I have ample reception as per the photo.

Yes, the carrier bundles are configured such that the handset will prefer VoWifi over cellular when available. If you want to use cellular to make a call instead of Wifi, you will need to temporarily disable VoWifi and then turn it back on again afterwards.

Just have multiple AP for great wifi coverage around your house, problem solved :v

To expand a bit regarding VoLTE and to paraphrase.

In the old days voice is handled completely different by all layers of the mobile network, all the way down to the PHY air interface.

With the newer '3G' (UMTS/WCDMA) voice channels are still given different CDMA orthogonal codes compare to data channel. The ones for voice are more robust and can deal with less ideal radio situations eg. cell edge/low signal conditions, to ensure calls having a better chance of surviving especially during mobility.

Now with 4G/LTE, it got rid of the concept of handling voice differently than data on the air interface and it changes the way it must be handled. Which is why VoLTE is taking so many years to develop and roll out after the initial LTE launch. Because it's kinda hard to handle a bunch of different crap eg. transferring a call between LTE and 3g/2g was a huge one. Something like verizon in the US still can't hand back to 3G/1x from VoLTE without breaking the call (but they probably felt their 700mhz 4g footprint is wide enough to take it as an acceptable compromise).

VoLTE traffic is prioritized at the base station level to make sure the call is reliable over the air interface. Policy all the way back to the core network (which is all ip) makes sure this reliability is maintained.

It's kinda comparable to the modern ota voip call with something like skype due to modern LTE network has enough bandwidth and low latency, but there is still a dramatic difference when the tower has a ton of users or congestion. Under those situations expecting a reliable voip call without interruption isn't going to happen while volte would most likely still work fine.

With those things in mind, wifi calling is a small part of the setup as it's (most likely) just a straight untrusted 3GPP access eg. building a tunnel between the carrier's core LTE network and your device over whatever internet connection.

The main thing I'm looking forward to is:

Any plans for HD voice (higher bitrate codecs)?

Because lol @ terrible consumer voip app running over internet connections with no qos, or highly compressed cellular phone codecs for 'regular mobile calls'.
Making phone call in 2018 is worse quality than 1990.

@danza Voice calls on-net are HD voice AMR over 3G and VoLTE you should see sometime in 2018 (I suspect)

I don’t think it’s too far away, but the handset testing isn’t my area, sorry.

So would HD voice over VoLTE be able to interconnect across networks, or will it still be on-net only?

Up to the networks but should be cross net IP end to end
