Sounddude:
tunafish: When telecom built their DSL network it was low grade so they didn't loose customers from their frame, ISDN and ATM networks, so I guess we are left with this legacy, a load of junk.

Thats why we built our own LLU network :)

Sadly only covering people within ~2km of large exchanges in Auckland (and the Wellington central exchange) though!

we would love to go into cabinets, if they charged market rates for backhaul and space.

Sounddude: Just heard from Telecom they are putting in a work around this afternoon. So it should be better tonight.

Will let you guys know when I hear more.

I hope this was not the fix you had in mind as now mine is well, broken!

Incidently our handover is also from GLF, and as far as I could tell , my connection from TBY-GLF was fine before.

speedtest

Clear congestion on the telecom wholesale network now, I normally get 8 to 11ms on the 3rd hop.

Tracing route to trademe.co.nz [202.162.73.2]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms     1 ms    <1 ms  Router [192.168.0.254]
  2     2 ms     1 ms     1 ms  192.168.1.254
  3   119 ms   116 ms   113 ms  lns2.alb.maxnet.net.nz [123.100.64.12]

Whoever you talked to at Telecom needs to be castrated.

Would congestion at TBY affect anything north of it directly? I'm closest to the RDB/BF exchange/cabinet north from there, and the connection has been notably better 5-7pm last couple of days vs earlier weeks, but seems like it's still heavily congested around 8-11pm.

1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.1
2   119 ms   114 ms   116 ms  lo1-ubs.erx1.nct.orcon.net.nz [60.234.8.199]

The second hop there was around 50ms about an hour ago, 15-20ms offpeak.

Maybe 2 years ago, but now I doubt it.

Orcon aren't currently unbundling the large exchanges in other cities/towns like Hamilton, Christchurch and Wellington.

So it's unlikely the ROI stacks up with FTTH looming within 10 years and all the uncertainly around in the industry.

haven't been reading the papers? :P

We signed a joint deal with Compass/Callplus to share unbundled exchanges. It will  open up the possiblity of unbundling more.

Honestly, the performance of Orcon is getting worse and worse during peak periods. I wanted to do a Speedtest to show you my speeds....but the website wont even load.

What is going on? Instead of giving people more data caps, why not actually buy more bandwidth?

I used to laugh at my old man for choosing crappy old telecom...now he's the smug one on his lightning speeds while I can barely even load international websites.

Normally my connection is crap between 4 to 11ish, but today at 5:45 its still pretty reasonable, 250-350 kb/sec compared to 5-20 kb/sec during peak. Get 1500+ kb/sec offpeak of course, but dont expect those speeds during peak.
