So I'm browsing around and I see on the bigpipe forum, ADSL users there are getting ~150ms to login.worldoftanks.asia. I thought I'd beat that on my fancy new UFB, but instead I get 227ms. A traceroute reveals the cause:

So it goes up to the US, then through Japan? Surely going through Australia and SEA would lead to a faster route?

Bigpipe seems to have a much saner route here.

different isps will have different routes.

considering orcons prefers to go via US, you will probably wanna play on the US server.

take for example Snaps route (telecom/bigpipes should look there abouts the same)

i dont really see you having the best of chances in a better route, but maybe you will be lucky enough to stir things up.

Since Orcon has its own international network, its very easy to route around issues like this. Sometimes BGP doesn't choose the best path based on latency requirements, so needs a bit of a hint.

ISP's with only one upstreams have limited options.

Fixed indeed. 140ms. Now that's service!

Thanks Sounddude.

So was I mistaken in thinking that GPON has an inherently lower latency than DSL?

well, count me impressed. both on the speed of picking up on this, and that there was no faffing about it.
