Hi, I've had Orcon 100/50 UFB for just over a year now (so not in contract anymore, yay!) and it seems to be getting slower and slower each day to a point where this is my speed to the local Christchurch Snap server.



For reference, this is what my speeds used to be like to the local Christchurch Snap server.



Seems strange, would there be any reason for this or are they just overselling their network? Usually the ping is about 30, but now it seems to be 60, I do get a better ping to other servers around New Zealand, but even still, I loved having a 30ms ping to AU game servers, now I get about 50-70 which is very noticeable.
I've also noticed my IP now says I'm I'm Nelson, It used to say I was in Auckland. Don't know if this would have any affect?

Oh and It's worth adding, from about 6 months ago my connection and phone has dropped out 4-5 times for about 3-5 days each time. Yes, I rung Orcon straight away when this happened, got a ticket, etc.
Oh, and the Orcon call centre technicians, well, you'll find out quite quickly that they aren't technicians.

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- If you are rural or urban

 


 

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

 


 

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

 



 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

What is your speed like to the Orcon speedtest server at speedtest.orcon.net.nz?

Were those dropout periods when you made any plan changes by any chance? We had an issue with one of the LFC's causing outages when plan changes were made but I think that has been resolved for some time now....

Yeah, my connection has been very unreliable in the past day, pings randomly rise to 100ms (to orcon.net.nz) then return back to 30.

Has anyone else had fiber for a good 6 months and seen it slow down? Because the ping problem started about 3 months back, when rather then getting a ping (to orcon.net.nz) of about 2, It's now 25-30. 

No, I'm not 'saturating' a link? Theres actually not much traffic coming from any of my computers at the moment.

Pointless doing too much testing at the moment, big land slip is affecting all fibre services between WTN and Chch so most if not all ISPs are having backhaul issues along that route.

Well, now nothing at all is working and I'm writing this from my iPhones 3G. I'm going to launch a ticket and hope this doesn't take 4 days to fix like the last times.

If it does take 4 days to fix then its likely that Mother Nature dumping a few hundred tonnes of rocks on the fibre had something to do with it.

Frustrating I know but the techs are struggling to even get access to the areas because of damage to the roads. All the ISPs with customers in Chch and South are affected.

Jumping up and down isn't going to fix storm related damage any faster. Many ISPs are suffering performance issues at present with the South Island being very badly hit and some other ISPs such as Snap are being impacted quite significantly.

His slow speed issue was prior to the storm and probably will need to be raised, but certainly not now given the power outages, broken fibre etc. Thankfully 3G hasn't gone yet.

Raise your issue with Orcon once you have re-established a consistent connection, have rebooted your router, checked your own computer and still find your speeds are down. Every other ISP has the same issues with speed drop offs etc, no point in hanging ORCON out to dry if you haven't even bothered to contact them.
