Dear 2degrees,

So, recieved my Fibre option letter from Chorus today. Totally excited. Look at all the fibre options available and 2degrees is quite well positioned price wise. So I call up to get my VDSL upgraded. And promptly get told that as an existing customer I am not eligible for any discounts. While I can understand that being a company line I can't see it really being upheld. I've been a well paying customer for over 5y mobile + broadband. The lest you could do once in a while let me partake in a discount. Basically now you've just about mad EVERY other fibre provider more attractive and you will lose me as a customer.

Mobile & broadband are a package discount at 2degrees, which usually makes it competitive. So if you lose my broadband you now also risk me going to another mobile provider. Are you (i.e. decision makers) really not interested or are you convinced that the hassle of a switch is enough to keep me? Just want to make sure I understood this correctly. I don't have any issues with 2degrees and would actually prefer to support them but I do think I'm being taken for a ride.

Cheers

Oliver

Well, just checking that that is really the attitude. I'm fine either way. If this were a side business I wouldn't even ask but this is their core business. So if they are not interested fine by me. I'll switch. Just would have liked for someone to care.

I'd give @2degreesCare a chance to respond. If you're out of contract on your existing package then it does seem strange they wouldn't honour the benefits if you recommit.

olivernz: Well, just checking that that is really the attitude.

Yes and ditto for every other provider. There is like no money in internet access services.

olivernz: Just would have liked for someone to care.

What are you offering again?

olivernz: Mobile & broadband are a package discount at 2degrees, which usually makes it competitive.

So they are offering a package discount and you want more?

olivernz: I've been a well paying customer for over 5y mobile + broadband.

And they have given you 5 years of mobile service and broadband in exchange?

Yes, new package and I'd sign up for 12m and different product.

I doubt there is any money in it for them with that proposition.

Typicaly an ISP might give free connection and el-cheapo modem with a 24 month contract. Assuming said customer doesn't call their helpdesk every day, they might start making a pittance after 12 months.

Yep but with that you're making my point. So it's just arbitrary and my loyalty in 2degrees I have is misplaced.

My loyalty.

No, the package discount makes them competitive. they wouldn't be with out it.

I could have switched at any point and taken advantage of discounts ant any time. Now I am prepared to re-sign up and there is no incentive at all. Incentives are a standard business practice. If you go down that path then you have to accept that people will expect it.

I do see where you're coming from. I am small fry so why should they care? Well maybe because Stuff-Fibre has been outpacing everyone else at the moment by at least looking like they care? Maybe because in the long run all those small fry do add up? Anyway let's see what 2degrees' answer is. I can fully accept whatever their take is but their stance will determine what i do and how i feel about it when i do it.

You still get your $10/mo mobile discount when moving to 2degrees UFB from VDSL if that was what you were querying about. They're also a good ISP.

Please, please never judge an ISP based on price - look at Spark for instance, they're the most expensive and yet have the most customers. The reason being is for starters their value added products and also because they're actually a good and stable ISP for your average home user.

Cheaper ISP's are just that - cheap. There are some corners cut with Skinny maybe being the only exception to this rule (who are Spark also). Don't look at the lowest price ISP as you'll likely be disappointed. Seen this way too many times now. ISP's actually don't make much from you as a customer.

Don't know if this is a recent policy change or not as the last time I updated my plan with 2d (circa 2 years ago) they gave me their new pricing and the latest fritz too.  From memory the deal was circa 50% off for the first 6 months then full price (I was well out of contract when I re-signed).

Not only that, when the pricing for new customers was announced a few months back the have adjusted my plan down to the same price - i didn't even ask it was just done.

Having been with a variety of providers over the years i've found 2d to be the best a this by far - maybe someone from 2d on here could help?

+1

Spark includes things which add value like Netflix and Spotify.

Personally, I am with InspireNet. As a small business owner and techie in the Manawatu, they are the obvious choice. I pay $85 per month for flat rate VDSL2.

I pay separately for my cellphone and tablet which are with Vodafone. I am rural so they are the obvious choice.

I have Netflix and Spotify who I also pay directly monthly.

I suggest just find the best choice for each of your needs and go with that.

nitrotech: thats how I felt with 2degrees before. They did go the extra mile and did the odd favour. This time I was just brushed off. It doesn't really fit what they previously stood for.

I didn’t like Pepsi, so I asked them to change their recipe. Incredibly, they just don’t care about the individual. Now I have to drink Coke.

Ok, so I gather I am an unreasonable romantic when it comes to telcos. Pity.

I've been through the retentions team @ 2 degrees recently. They did try, but couldn't compete with other ISP deals.

I think you need to remove any emotion from the decision, and just move to another ISP.

Currently I'm jumping providers every 12 months to chase the best deals. Seems to be the best way these days as loyalty means very little.
