My brother is trying to play fortnight and the ping with our new fiber connection is jumping bettween 100ish and 40ish at random times. Does anyone know if this is something to do with the fritz box or the line? we are all ethernet cabled up.

Cheers

Hi, as a test please try pinging one of 2Degree's DNS servers 202.37.101.1 and see if there is much variance there, I think you will find it will bob up and down a mS or two at most, which will demonstrate there is no issue with your fibre connection or connection to 2D's routers, but the routes to international locations (I am guessing Syd if its 40mS) is anyones guess and probably not that fixable. You should also note that most routers including those sitting infront of where ever you are pinging to dont priorities ICMP (Ping) its left to the end or the queue to deal with, this can cause significant variance if the traffic to that router is getting up there.

You'll actually need to provide some diagnotics if you want any advice or help. Just saying "my pings are inconsistent" means absolutely nothing.

Where are you testing to, how are you testing, and what results are you seeing?

Cheers Cyril, you gave me an idea and I looked into opening the ports for fortnite and to prioritize it via the fritzbox, well see how it goes

Thanks again

That'll make zero difference.

What is the problem you think you are seeing?

Hi, so did you do the test I asked, and what did you see. As Steve says, changing priority in Fritz will make no diff.

Yea I ran the test you mentioned, it was coming back as 1 or 2 ms. The Ping to the fortnite servers was 100+ on this site

https://gameserverping.com/fortnite-battle-royale

The issue is fixed at the moment, maybe it was just the fortnite servers being crap lol

Im not an expert in networking, I was just asking trying to help my brother out.

So cheers for the kind help Cyril, I Just hope Steve has a better day tomorrow seems like he hates the world for some reason lol.

Thanks again

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I've literally helped thousands of people on here over the years and would have happily helped you.

It's however pretty hard to offer you any help when you still haven't explained what your actual issue is...
