My brother has been having issues downloading media on WhatsApp messenger while on Wi-Fi

His ISP is slingshot. He is on a contract.

We troubleshooted for hours replacing with another modem, isolating devices etc. Every single mobile in his house is effected and it works fine when they come to my house which is on spark or even works on any mobile data.

Called slingshot today and they apparently know about this issue for 2 days or so and provided alternative asking us to download a older apk file from whatsapp.com/android and try.

The issue he has is that his work phone has restricted him to install apk files which means to download media he needs to use data.

There is no solution to this from slingshot and they do not advise customers until they go through entire troubleshooting and the first csr was asking him to change phone or go ask his work admin to do it.

He is not allowed to move now since he is on contract.
Not a rant but a fyi for someone on this ISP.

Hi @maxeon,

I'm sorry to hear about the run around you've had with our Contact Centre.

I've had a word with our NOC and IT departments about the issue your brother has been getting.

It looks like it isn't Slingshot exclusive and the developers have some sort of issue with its connection to the Wifi/mobile data toggle.

Here is a possible fix:

1. Phone Settings

2. Apps

3. WhatsApp

4. Data Usage

5. Wi-Fi Disabled - Please have your brother toggle this back on.

The app may still not auto download pictures and videos after this. If so, an uninstall/reinstall after any data is backed up should sort it out.

Let me know how you go.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt,

No luck, we have tried backing up messages, uninstalled and re-installed as well.

Weird

This is not just related to Slingshot I could not download on the Vodafone fibre and 2degrees mobile data yesterday

No idea why you tried a different modem if everything else is ok

I would not even think this issue could be an ISP issue and amazed they even did any trouble shooting with you!

I tried the modem to isolate the issue if it has "anything" to do with it. That was my last resort.

Secondly - as I explained it works fine on Vodafone, 2degrees, Spark Data on mobile. We have multiple phones tried it out for days.

It also works fine on my house Spark Fibre.

There was no troubleshooting done by slingshot here, we called explained and the CSR knew what exactly we were talking about as they had few calls.

If it works with some ISPs but not others I would try changing DNS server settings on the router.
