Hi 2Degrees

I am in the market for another fritzbox so that I can setup a Mesh Wifi network, I currently have my eye on a few on trademe.

I could not help noticing that some of these are 2Degrees branded. Are these OK to purchase? I don't want to purchase something that a user was suppose to return after their broadband contract ended? And the device is locked to 2Degrees.

Yes I believe its safe to purchase. AFAIK they aren't locked.

I have 3 fritz boxes, one is a 2 degrees one and there's no difference from what I can see.

I overwrote the 2degrees firmware with the base version from the avm website.

So will I need to do this too if I purchase one?

No, all you have to do is a factory reset and set it up with whoever you want.  You just need there settings.

As per smithy, you don't need to do this.

It might pay to check the serial number with 2Degrees.  You used to own the modems when you got them from 2Degrees, but more recently they are rental only and have to go back if you change ISP.  So the newer models will likely be rental ones and may still be owned by 2Degrees.

If you use the 2Degrees firmware on another ISP, it may still try to connect to the 2Degrees config servers every day.  But that should not cause any problems (other than a tiny bit of traffic) as you would not be registered as a customer.  In my old 7390, there is an option to turn that off, so I would recommend doing that.  Other than that, using the 2Degrees firmware should not be a problem, but you can install the standard version from the AVM site.

This was actually my main concern, more than if the device will just work or not. So far I have not seen anybody from 2Degrees commenting here so I am going to assume that they are OK to purchase. It will be a shame if some people are selling these devices on knowing full well that they are suppose to be returned to 2Degrees.

You may have more luck getting a response from 2 degrees staff if you ping @2DegreesCare or @NickMack

EDIT: Though FYI the best way to get a 2degrees Fritzbox is join 2 degrees! ;-)  Been with them since the snap days and they have been awesome the whole time.

I still have my red one from years back. I am actually still using it. I never purchased it but I was on a 2 year plan to get it. I can't fault 2Degrees. As far as I understand, even if I joined 2Degrees now the Fritzbox would not be mine to keep.

Would you be buying stolen goods?

Should be returned to 2D. The seller is not the owner of the goods. Food for thought!

I don't think there is any indication that just because they are 2Degrees branded they are stolen.

Correct, a bunch of customers buy them outright.
