I am experiencing some very odd events concerning my phone related to the 3G shutdown and need to know if this is a back end issue on the 2 degrees network or I do indeed need to get a new phone. Below lists some of the concerning issues I have been having:

  1. About 1-2 months ago, I get notified via SMS and voicemail that my phone ‘may’ not work when the 3g shutdown occurs. I go to a 2 degrees shop – notify them I have 4g and VOLTE set up on my phone and get advised that if the phone is working at that point in time the phone should be fine. The phone worked fine until yesterday.
  2. Yesterday whenever I make a call I get a recorded message advising that my phone will work on making normal calls but won’t work dialling 111, my call attempt is terminated but the recipient of my call appears to have a call come through from me but no call is connected when they answer. I make a test call to 111 and that works.
  3. Yesterday evening I make a test call to my wife – also on 2 degrees. That call goes through without any issues. My wife call also call me.
  4. Currently, anyone calling me appears to receive the same recorded message I receive (see point 2) even if they are not on two degrees or have a 3g phone.
  5. I look at my phone at the time of sending this message and see 5G at the top of my cellphone screen.

So the question is, is this back end related or phone related. My current phone is an Asus Zenfone 10. I would also appreciate if anyone, even if a new phone is warranted, could possibly offer an explanation as to why I am getting these weird issues going on.

If you go into your phone settings, it should give you an exact phone model number - this will help as well, as different regions get different support for frequencies etc and the model will help clarify you are using a supported model.

Yeah have checked IMEI number and according to the two degrees websites apparently my phone may work even if it is 4G compatable. The messaging is inconsistent with the experience I am getting and after seeing that two degrees royally s**t itself last week - which I did not experience by the way, I don't know what to think at the moment. I cannot find the precise number of my phone model - even the phone details int eh settings is not forthcoming with that information.

Spark's 111 VoLTE service rejects handsets that do not support IPv6. We don't use IPv6 in our VoLTE network at the moment and previously there was 3G fallback so we did not discover it until after 3G shutdown. It has come as a bit of a surprise to everyone that there are handsets out there that will not support IPv6.

Your handset has apparently been identified as one of those. If you are 100% certain that your test call to 111 was sent via VoLTE (and not VoWifi) then you can call care and they will get you taken off the list to notify. Alternatively send it to me and I'll do it.

The calls will proceed normally at the end of the announcement (and I think we built it to only annoy you once a day anyway). People who are calling you shouldn't hear it at all but there is a slight chance I mucked it up and they might have heard it if they called you and you didn't answer but rather the call was diverted e.g. to voicemail. It wouldn't be the first time I've made that mistake. 🚸

Bear in mind though: the problem is with Spark's 111 VoLTE service, not 2degrees'. So if you don't change your phone you might find yourself in a situation where there is only Spark coverage needing to make a 111 call, and then it doesn't work.

EDIT - correction to this: got my info backwards (as it was second hand, not directly from the handset team). It is actually caused by the fact that 2degrees doesn't currently support IPv6, not Spark. Apologies to the Spark people out for there for casting incorrect aspersions!

Definitely not using wifi calling - I have that switched off by choice. Very interesting that this is spark related and not 2degrees. I have emailed 2degrees support (ticket #510705330) who are trying to get to the bottom of this. Shall I play it out with them - you seem much more onto it I have to admit.

So after purchasing a Samsung S26+ I still was getting the message every time I try to call. Have tried calling my wife and voicemail and get it every time. The difference being is that the call goes through, but I have to listen to that message every time. Speaking to customer support they directed me to Settings--> Connections --> Mobile networks --> Network mode

Currently states 5G preferred. The CSR suggests this should say VoLTE.

Anyway, the CSR has confirmed the phone is set up correctly their end and that she is putting an email out to have the 'notification' removed. Apparently will take two working days.

Hope this makes sense to you. Glad I no longer work in telecoms. It sounds like it has been a right nightmare for those working on the backend during the 3g shutdown. Reminds me of the good old days of the Telecom Notwork.

Anyway, this is just an FYI.

You'll get taken off the list in a day or two once the records of your new phone filter through.
