hi everyone.
So i finally made the jump from Vodafone to 2Degrees. I ported my number which went very smoothly but it all came to a sketching halt when i put my 2degrees sim into my new Motorola Milestone (droid). I'm posting this here as i couldn't find any really useful information about this problem anywhere (maybe my google skills suck) and would like to share it just in case someone else is having a similar problem specially in New Zealand. My milestone is imported from the UK and is unlocked and previously work without any problem on the vodafone NZ network. So some details about the problem below.

The problem i was having was the phone would have no reception (the little bars icon in the notification bar would have no bars and a little x) also the it would have "(no service) | 2Degrees" one the screen. The phone itself could see the network but would not connect to it (if you went to the search for networks in settings it would list all available networks eg: 2Degrees, Vodafone,Telecom NZ without problem. If tried to initiate a call the phone would say "not registered to network" even though when i went to settings and selected the network and android said it was registered. Sometimes i would also get the different message when trying to initiate a call/txt or anything that used the network "sim does not allow connection to network". I tried all sorts of things found on Google and none worked.

things i tried:

  • Going to setting making sure "select network automatically" was enabled (also tired selecting 2degree manually) which is what is recommended you do by the 2degrees website.

  • putting in APN settings.

  • buying another brand new simcard.

  • Resetting the phone.

  • calling the import dudes.

  • calling 2degrees support (who were very friendly and helpful)

******SOLUTION********
Now buy some luck i found a old 2degree sim lying around my draw of old stuff (one of those ones they sent out out at launch) i tried this and to my amazement worked fine. so i rung up 2degrees support again and talked to them about this discovery and with another strike of luck the support guy i was talking to said that he had another customer with a Motorola milestone that had some problems and looked at the job notes and found the similar problem had happened with him. so he advised that a sim swap had worked for him. so they got me a new blank sim card and transfered my number over to it and its now working like a dream with no problems. So after all this and sleepless nights (well only one lol) it turned out that it was a incompatible sim card. Looking at the copper contacts on the back of the sim card you can see there is a slightly different layout to the one i had originally brought from the store and the one i had been given for the sim swap.

Anyways hope this helps someone out there if not oh well.
also would like to note that talked to three different people at 2degrees who were all very friendly and sounded genuinely interested in trying to solve my problem instead of the classic "you need to talk to the person you brought it from" speech that err some other companies have given me ;-P

Hey, Did you try doing a sim swap? because i found the new sim cards that you buy from the likes of dicksmiths (prepay ones) dont work. But if you ring up 2degrees and ask them to do a sim swap i found this solved my problem. They can either send one to you or in my case i didnt want to wait a couple days so they said that i could pick up a blank sim from the warehouse stationary and do the sim swap over the phone.
