Hi guys (especially SOUNDDUDE),

I'm currently with Slingshot and honestly I can't take it anymore.
During the day download speed is about 2 mbps at best and upload is 0.7 mbps on avg too.
Been like this since 2011. Dont know why but in december i was getting around 5.

Anyways,
Just got a mailer from Orcon(more like a cardboard cutout) about the BestDealEver promo thing.
And apparently not every house got the mailer ? hmm.

So my question is:

1. $70 per month (not other gimmick/hidden fees) for Landline + fs/fs broadband + 30 GB of data. AM I CORRECT ??

2. I live in Broadfield Street , near the roundabout :) , so I'm not sure if that's close to the exchange or whatever you guys call it (i'm not really into that kind of stuff, i'm a software student :D ) .....Can ORCON guarantee that I will get at least 5 mbps download and 1 mbps upload speed consistently ? ....I have a DLINK-DSL G604T modem router which is ADSL+ capable.

3. If I subscribe to the plan above , will i be on ADSL+ ? ...what does that even mean ? XD XD

4. If I just subscribe online, do i need to inform Slingshot that i'm moving bband service ? and Telecom and I'm moving landline too ? And what about the direct debit that i've set up with them from my bank account, would that automatically stop ?

5. How long will the internet connection be down for when you guys are setting it up? Hours, days ?

Best to check their website, or call their 0800 number and ask these questions, mi. I doubt that they will provide speed guarantees, though. But I've found them at least as good as Telstraclear (my previous ISP), and their customer support people seem to know what they're talking about.

Everyone was a noob (at everything!) once upon a time: there's nothing to apologise for there. But you're better going straight to Orcon with these questions. Everyone prefers noobs who've done their homework :-)

1. Yes, you are correct. The only catch is it's a 12 month contract which costs $149 to exit early.

2. Orcon's plans are full speed (as fast as your line can go) but don't make any guarantees about any minimum speeds (no ISP does).

3. Go to www.orcon.net.nz/bestdealever and put your phone number in. In theory you shouldn't have got the mailer if you aren't going to be getting ADSL2+ speeds. This deal is for customers only in the Orcon+ zones, which basically means the zones in which they have their own equipment installed in the phone exchanges. In noob terms, ADSL2+ is simply a faster version of ADSL, which is the standard method of delivering Internet over the copper phone lines.

4. No. Orcon handle the whole thing. Sign up and they take care of everything, you don't need to contact anyone, and if there are any issues you contact Orcon as they are your service provider.

5. Possibly a few hours during the changeover, certainly not days though. You get an email and a text from Orcon telling you exactly what day the changeover is, so you'll know when to potentially expect a short outage.

K, looks like i'll be signing up. I was an orcon customer a few years ago so i still have the username&password details :)

No.4 is a surprise though, i mean they can tell Slingshot to stop taking money frm my account ? So basically all i need to do is subscribe through that link above ? ....Seems too convenient to be true hehe.
But if it is, i'll take it lol.

Oh...1 more thing .......so i'm most probably going to use the same landline number after moving to OR. ...if in the future i want to move back to Telecom , can i keep the number ?

In basic terms: as long as you are the Slingshot account holder, then by signing up with Orcon you give them authority to close your Slingshot account on your behalf. Sign up through the website and away you go.

You'll keep the same phone number provided you remain within the same exchange, but for peace of mind you could always contact Telecom first.

You likely won't get 1mbit upstream off ADSL2+, realistically the best you'll get is ~700-900kbit/s.

As people have said above, you won't get a guarentee of anything from any ISP unless you pay "megabucks"

One more question before I subscribe today:

My sister often calls her friend overseas using a calling card (those $10 cards u buy at the gas station) ...
Now i know that we have to call a landline number to access the card's service.

Will Orcon charge a special fee or any fee at all for those calls ? OR will it be treated as a local number ?

If it's a local number it should be treated as any other local phone call, but wouldn't hurt to call Orcon and confirm with them.

If you're going onto one of the @Home plans with Orcon, and the number your sister needs to dial to access the calling-card rates is classed as a "local number" then you won't be charged for this call.

What's the number your sister has to dial?

This number that you dial, is the number unique to you? Or is it the generic one that everyone who subscribes to that calling card service dials into? If it's the latter, can you let me know the number?

It should be free, but I can check for you

So long as you are NOT putting an 09 infront of it, then this will be regarded as a local call. If you're going onto one of the residential plans with Orcon, local calls will be free.

The Auckland 965 numbers look like they could be like 0900 numbers. But they are actually native to the Telstraclear network ... although number portability means this number could be on any network now (ie Telstra, Orcon, Telecom, Vodafone, etc). But yes, it will be classed as a local call if you are calling it from Auckland.
