And then theres "Remote Differential Compression" slowdown, problems with using shortcuts, slowdown in copying while using Media Player... but like you say thats another topic...

No bloody wonder it takes so long copying the files from sony vegas to the HTPC.

Don't get me wrong - DRM has hundreds of issues - but this isn't one of them...

And even if it was, drm is wouldn't be circumvented by simply changing the extension....

Just spoke to one of the Microsofties and he confirmed that h.264 will not be in the forthcoming Media Centre update. They're holding off support until Windows 7. A bit disappointing, but I'd rather they release a solid solution than release something prematurely.

If this is true, then what does it actually mean? No NZ Freeview|HD via Vista Media Centre? Or just no native Blu-Ray support? Or....gulp....both?

Native Blu-ray was never a starter unfortunately, although there are plenty of third party solutions for it. What it means for us is no Freeview HD until Windows 7 which is due ~2010.

if thats the case then I might have to "hunt down" and "archive" a copy of the leaked beta cause its more or less working in that! At least the DVB-S Mpeg2 plus EIT guide stuff is likely to be kept.

outsite of any issues with the DVB-T/h.264 support, what else is "broken" or "suboptimal" in the leaked beta? I.e. how feasible would it be to continue to run the beta version (and will the bloody thing timebomb?)

As is usual for MS betas, you can pretty much guarantee that it will expire.

Given all the rumours and "from a reliable source" type stuff that always goes on with stuff like this (see the iPhone threads for a prime example of this), I'm going to wait for the final release before I give up on anything discussed here.

Another rumor for the pot - looks like its been split into two releases, one this month (multi tuner etc), one later in the year (h.264)...

Looking at the state of the first beta this would make perfect sense, as the majority of the unstability is around h.264...

But then again - just like the next guy I'm only guessing...
