katipo: The MTV 3600TD has no fan. It should be almost completely silent.
Maybe your drive's bearings are on their last legs.. :)
wiredr: any one had any issues with the 3.11 upgrade .?
i have switched back to 3.09 as i am getting sick of the system hanging on tv3 . the 3.11.upgrade was supposed to fix a problem with series record instead the problem is worse .
machine froze after recording 15mins of " lie to me " prog recorded OK but i had to hard reboot to get control back again. has never happened on 3.09 software
Strange when it's a fan noise, nothing like a HDD :) The only time you really notice is when it's a really hot night, like the last couple of days :)
Thanks for the 3.11 firmware tip. I'll stick with 3.09 then. Is the old firmware still available for downgrades?
Lurch: Anyone else noticing how loud the fan's get on these? Sounds like mine might need to have some dust blown out ;-)
Also wouldn't mind upgrading the HDD to 1TB has 500GB just isn't enough, or the option to backup to the network would be nice :-)

the document published by freeview NZ ltd http://www.freeviewnz.tv/images/uploads/file/FreeView%20DTT%20Receiver%20Spec%20v1_3.pdf.
does not prohibit the transfer of recorded digital content to another storage device.
the only copy protection required is the implementation of hdcp on the hdmi output.
the inference is that data shifting is optional not prohibited
what do others think ?
katipo: Does anyone else have problems skipping adverts. Fast forwarding and rewinding is really erratic. I know some features are crippled, but am not sure what part of this is purposely affected and what part is just poor implementation. I find little difference between 4x -> 32x, and the time-code update is really sluggish and intermittent.
Also, I quite often notice that at certain points in the recording, if you FF or FR over a position the playback position will jump forward or back by a massive amount then continue to cycle back to that loop again. This is without bookmarks or markers. Really annoying.
The only thing that works consistently is the skip buttons, but 10 mins is far too coarse to be really useful. It sometimes gets me over a stuck position, but anything over 2x will cause the large skip again.
