I have a Sony 46" 1080p TV and a Panasonic 32" 720p/1080i TV, each fed by Mythtv. Admittedly I am only doing (satellite) SD at present, but could easily upgrade to HD when I sort my antenna.

So I guess my questions are:

1. At present I have two tuners and as the satellite only has two multiplexes I can record as many programs as I like at a time. How many channels at a time can this giveaway device record?

2. Can I share the recordings to other networked devices in the house?

3. Can I add extra storage, either via USB/eSATA, or via other machines on my network? 500G is not a lot of storage for HD.

4. Can this device tell me the weather, what movies are on in my neighbourhood, play music from a server, download fanart etc for recorded programs, transcode my recordings for use on my android phone, access RSS news feeds, allow me to set up recordings over the internet from anywhere in the world?

Optoma HD-20 projector onto an old infocus 76" pulldown screen
Oppo BDP-83
Xbox 360 (launch model)
Zinwell/DSE Freeview Box.

The freeview box is a bit of a weak point in the current setup!

Just recently bought a Panasonic DMR-XW350 after looking at all the options. The only downside is the lack of the on-screen guide as it's not Freeview certified but I like the inclusion of a DVD player/recorder which means one less box cluttering up the lounge (or 2 if you include the VCR player which is still under the telly but unplugged in case the grandchildren want to watch a video when they visit).

As for the programme guide I found a cool app which accesses the next week's guide on my iPod Touch.

We have:

one ten-year-old HUGE television, not flatscreen or anything though.

The home theatre system works, but only just. The wires are constantly falling apart, the sub is broken and it crackles constantly. =p

No Sky, Freeview, gaming consoles or anything. Was looking at freeview but couldn't afford it as i was just made redundant. Looking for a new job now but i really want C4!!!!!

hehe help? =P

I was interested to understand how this might fit into a home network - eg can you replay recorded programs across some sort of network connection? Or is it strictly a standalone device and non-networkable?

Putting my bid in for my son who is slumming it with a 20" CRT TV (poor bugger) and analogue signal. He is saving up his hard earned pocket money for an iphone (which should take him about 3 years) so being able to watch quality TV on his CRT TV might just help him through!

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

reviews suggest that the ethernet and usb ports are disabled in the NZ model.

why? who knows.

one reviewer also said he had found a workaround and it's posted on the geekzone forums. I'll look for it.

This would be so handy for when I go flatting, everyone will want to watch different channels and having HD will be a great bonus, i'm stuck with SD.

Wow, nice machine, i guess im an AV technophile, my setups are MySKY-HDi, Philips DVD recorder, DSE 5.1 DVD player, Panasonic 6 Head HiFi NICAM VHS recorder, 23" LCD TV, and an old Transonic 5.1 Dolby Digital/Dolby Pro Logic home theatre system, but then again i work in the film & TV production industry, so in one way these are tools for me.

Okay, lets try this again, since my first attempt ended in miserable failure!

TV - Philips 32" widescreen, designed not to show any programme's ratio in it's entirety- widescreen stuff looks too small, normal stuff loses the top and bottom - awesome!

DVD - Sony DAV880 home theatre system, it was a dog when I bought it, and still is - I think Duckworths saw me coming! Stopped working in less than six weeks, and then again six months later. Two years later needed a new laser unit, and lo and behold, it nees another one again. Checked the websites this year, and found it was an all too common complaint with this system - So much for their 'flagship model'...

Additional DVD - Black Diamond, which piggy backs onto the Sony system so we can actually watch DVDs;

Telstra box - 'nuff said

Laptop - Asus, nearly five years old, works like a champ - plugs into TV so we can watch stuff I've downloaded that I cannot buy DVD's for. Does the job! :D
