My perfect recorder would use a single tuner for both recordings (since they are both on the same channel/mux) and both recordings would be complete, i.e. the stream would be recorded to two recordings for the 5 minute crossover.

The Magic TV MTV3600 does exactly this. One of the reasons I've persevered with it through all the restarts and slow downs which thankfully seem to be pretty much resolved now.

Doesn't seem like it would be that hard. The Panasonic does a lot of other things really well, so you'd think they could get this sorted.

I agree, if it's already recording that stream anyway surely it isn't too difficult to duplicate it while the overlap happens. I was planning on buying a Panny to replace my MTV3600 but when I found out how it handled the overlap I decided against purchasing. My old JC Matthews PVR did it the same way as the Panny and it drove me nuts how if you deleted a certain programme you'd loose the finish of the show that preceded it.

I had the JC Matthews too. I almost prefer how that handled things. I didn't mind keeping the extra recording until I'd watched the start/end.

It's a nuisance on the Panasonic that if you're recording three shows (1 followed by 2 concurrent) you sometimes get one of the shows cutting off or recording on +1. I tend to change the recording time on the first recording to record both shows (so only two tuners used) and then split the recordings afterwards. You can find the exact time to split it which is good. The ability to edit it (and transcode) on the box is pretty handy.

It's just not perfect.

Josh - can you please let us know how the T2200 handles concurrent recordings???? I'm hoping it's the same as the MTV3600 :)

Josh - any particular reason why so few of the retailers stocking this new unit don't have it listed on their websites? I've only found it on JB ($388 but apparently out of stock), Heathcote's ($449) and one other.

Apparently my local NL has it in stock (for $399), but they don't have it listed on their website; nor is it on sites of The Warehouse, Smiths' City or Harvey Norman.

Is this a deliberate move to stop online sales from retailers for the first few weeks?

I'm in the market for a a new recorder, on behalf of my parents - whose Magic TV has apparently bit the dust in the past few days. While I've been reading all the recent DishTV related threads here I've been amazed at how many people have had their Magic pack up over the last few months - given you're the distributor of this product, can you comment about its (lack of) reliabilty?

As this product is released last week, retailers take time to add the product to the website, there's no deliberate move made by any of the retailers and overtime the product will be available, its best to contact them directly and request the product to be stocked online.

MagicTVs are renown for be good quality and reliable. Very few customers would post that there magictv is still running well with no problems after a few years old. Any recent posts will be from people that have problems and ones that have problems search and find others. So it ends up looking like lots of people always have problems.

Re Magic, I get your comment re internet comments will be from those with problems, but given those in my family with a Magic have had their units fail I remain weary of this brand.

You can mirror the current channel you have on your T2200 to a HTML streaming device or software like VLC or Kodi over your local networking using the T2200 IP Address followed by :8080
Very Handy for distributing the channel to another TV screen without any cables.

How does this work in practice? I take it there are no controls available remotely, but can it display a recorded programme, it that is what the unit is playing? On a device like a tablet (iPad or Android)
does it allow for full screen viewing of the video, provided the browser provides food this? Thanks for any information.

You can control the unit over IP by entering the IP address of the T2200 unit into any browser on any device on the local network and control the receiver that way, no need for long IR extensions and physical remotes. Live streaming works only on live TV only however playback is something we can look into in the future.

Subtitles and Audio Descriptions also work over live streaming. If you download VLC for iPad or iPhone etc... you will be able to watch what is on the T2200 (Subtitles and AD included) Yes Full Screen available.
Please note on the reliability of the router, recent modern routers are the best e.g. All in One VDSL, ADSL, UFB routers with good range will work.

+ 1 for that; this is one of the big selling points of the Panasonics for me, which I had thought about going with when I want/need to replace our aging TiVos. I'd certainly look at the T2200 for our own use, but its lack of streaming playback would def. be a negative (not such an issue for my parents, I suspect!).

I'm in exactly the same boat. Although my TiVo is still going strong I like to keep myself schooled up as one of my parents two TiVo's are starting to get some speed wobbles. I also know of another household with a MagicTV box that has some serious glitches that rebooting, firmware updates and factory resets etc... don't fix. They're persevering for now but good to know what options are out there when I get that phone call.

Well, called into check out this model at my local (PN) NL's store... Couldn't see it out on display, and once I found someone to ask they had no idea about it... once located, all four units were still in their box. When I asked to see it in action I was told their usual practice was simply to stick the box out on display; apparently they never set up DVRs etc for customers to actually use.

I explained that the proof's in the pudding - seeing the box in the flesh wasn't going to give me any impression as to how the unit actually performs! Best they could offer was their 14 day 'right of exchange', which if my parents buy it and don't like it they can swap it for another product or a credit note, but NOT get their money back.

I don't like the idea of purchasing something like this without having first had a go at using it, especially as I have to ensure it's something a couple in their 80s can operate easily. Guess I'll see if any other store has them available to test drive...

Is this typical of other NLs and other retailers around the country selling these products?

The Warehouse currently has 20% off DishTV products (think it was this, rather than all Freeview stuff?); rang my local store, which has the T2200 in stock - the person I spoke to initially stated it was full retail ($449), but I asked her to check with her supervisor who has agreed the 20% discount should apply. And, with a far better right of return policy there as opposed to NL, I'm comfortable knowing my parents can return it if the user experience isn't good enough for them.

So the T2200 is c. $360 at the moment, if anyone's interested.

Seems damn good value for what you get, given the addition of Freeview Plus to the mix.

I agree this is an issue. I took the plunge and got one from Noel Lemming, based on reviews, as a potential replacement for MySky (basic subscription).

It seems a good product but I am disappointed with the remote which has small buttons for rewind/play/forward. As a Freeview PVR I am used to MySky being fairly easy to jump forward 4 minutes (go to 30x, count 8 secs) with large buttons but the T2200 is small. This graphic shows the web version on the left, actual remote in the middle and our old MySky on the right:

If you look at the way the remote might sit in your hand the transport buttons are much more natural with MySky. I know I can probably try and source a universal remote but it would be better if a model sold as a PVR had a more ergonomic remote.

The live streaming works but seems to need high bandwidth, possibly as it was set to HD sources, and was a bit too much for a skinny WiFi 802.11g connection. Some nice features but I need to get more comfort that it will pass the WAF before I talk more about getting rid of MySky which is often just used for recording of Freeview content.

I guess it depends on what you're used too. I HATE the MySky remote with a passion, it's one of the worst remotes I've ever used.
