dwl: I agree this is an issue. I took the plunge and got one from Noel Lemming, based on reviews, as a potential replacement for MySky (basic subscription).

It seems a good product but I am disappointed with the remote which has small buttons for rewind/play/forward. As a Freeview PVR I am used to MySky being fairly easy to jump forward 4 minutes (go to 30x, count 8 secs) with large buttons but the T2200 is small. This graphic shows the web version on the left, actual remote in the middle and our old MySky on the right:

If you look at the way the remote might sit in your hand the transport buttons are much more natural with MySky. I know I can probably try and source a universal remote but it would be better if a model sold as a PVR had a more ergonomic remote.

Man, didn't check out the remote properly, but totally agree re the inappropriately small and poorly placed rw/ff buttons; it'll be interesting to see how my parents find it! BTW, where did you find the image of the 'web version', as I couldn't see an image of the remote on the Dish TV site. The one on the left does seem to have clearer labels and larger buttons, which may have made it easier to operate.

We use Harmony Ones at our place, and I personally think that's one of the better remotes I've used in terms of the way they sit in the hand as well as having key buttons located well for ease of use, including rw and ff. This remote looks more like one that comes with a cheap IR receiver for a PC than with a $450 product. A good remote is a key part to a good user experience, I reckon - far more so than the aesthetics of the unit itself! Dish TV, perhaps the quality of the remote is something to consider in future iterations/products?

BTW, The Warehouse only charged me $349 for the unit, so for some reason a higher than 20% discount.

The one on the left is from the web page if you browse to the IP of the T2200.

I could take the unit back (I think 14 days allowed) but overall the remote is main issue and replacements are getting cheaper. Will check out the Harmony range.

Re NL 14 day timeframe at NL - as I noted earlier, this is a right of exchange period, not right of return, ie they won't give your money back, buggers...

Yeah, even some of the cheaper Harmonys should give you a better remote experience, but they are more limited in their ability to create custom buttons.

Personally, I like the layout of the Harmony One better than the newer (flasher, higher res...) Harmony Touch, and elected to buy the former over the latter because of this - especially the location of key controls like the ff and rw on the Touch at the top of the remote, so nowhere near where the hand naturally falls (see http://media3.popsugar-assets.com/files/2012/11/48/3/192/1922507/627082ced117f531_71Lqqlr3d8L._AA1500_/i/Logitech-Harmony-Touch.jpg). But that's still better than the location/size on the T2200's remote!

Can the T2200 receive FreeviewPlus on demand internet TV at the moment, or does it need "official" approval on the above web page and then be activated before on demand programs "work"?

Should be on there next week, I have sent a email to the Freeview team, and also the approved list database (Checked Weekly) for all Freeview Products was sent in a few days ago

Yes, everything works as its a MyFreeviewPlus product, the S8200 MyFreeview Satellite you are talking about is still a work in progress hence why it's apps are not yet available.

+ 1 for that; this is one of the big selling points of the Panasonics for me, which I had thought about going with when I want/need to replace our aging TiVos. I'd certainly look at the T2200 for our own use, but its lack of streaming playback would def. be a negative (not such an issue for my parents, I suspect!).

Re streaming playback, do you mean to PC? Otherwise I'd just use the iPad/tablet to stream direct from the SVOD app for that service bypassing the T2200?

I installed my parents' unit on Sunday, and gave them a quick run-through yesterday. I must say the biggest issue for them (given they're in their 80s) is getting their heads around accessing content from both UHF and internet (So they are trying to access on demand programmes from the library section.) That said, they probably offer a good test-case as to what is tricky to use on the product and what works well.

The biggest issue they currently face is their TV signal has reduced in quality sometime since I installed it on Sunday to the point that on many channels they have no picture. I haven't had a chance to check the aerial, but it's bad timing given they will probably link it to the installation of the product! I did show them the TV has got the same reception problems when the aerial is connected directly to it (not daisy-chained via the Freeview box). And my understanding is this unit's supposed to be better at dealing with poor signal quality than the Magic?

My first impressions on the T2200 are given below. There may be more negatives than positives listed here, but that's not how I see it overall; thus far, it seems to be a good product that offers excellent value for money.

* Setup was generally painless, apart from my initial inability to get it connected to the internet - then I found it helps to ensure the powerline adapter hasn't fallen out of the socket!

* In the manual it states there are a bunch of options that need to be selected during set-up; after I was asked to select the country I didn't see any of the other options (region, language, resolution, aspect ratio...) - it went straight to scanning for channels. I imagine these settings can be amended later, but for a newbie the lack of seeing this stuff when setting up may be confusing (I reset the unit so did the setup twice; both times I also didn't get these options). (BTW, the bottom image on p 11 of the manual shows a 'satellite scan', which also doesn't line up with this being a UHF box!)

* The unit seems to take an age to start up when turning on from standby.

* It does, however, seem to run quiet and cool - two things my parents' Magic could never manage! (When I replaced the Magic - which was so noisy it had to sit on a foam mat to reduce the vibrations - with this unit on Sunday, the latter was hot as hell - given it's stopped recording I imagine something significant is wrong there!).

* I see you're working on a new manual - while I like having one that's written in proper English and is easy to understand, it's a pity no useful information is currently given on how to use Freeview Plus. Given this is the key difference to earlier and most other current recorders out there, I would suggest this is the one area where a greater degree of assistance and instruction would be helpful. While I assume how each app is structured and navigated isn't up to Freeview Plus, it would be useful for new users to be given general instructions on Freeview Plus. While I've not had the opportunity to experiment much yet, thus far I find the 'mini guide' non-intuitive to use; it's also fairly slow. To be honest expect my parents to go straight to the on demand apps).

* See earlier comments regarding the remote control; my only real problems relate to the size and placement of the player controls. My parents are and will continue to struggle with them, given they are relegated to standard-sized buttons in the bottom section.

* Agree with an earlier post that it's unfortunate having more than one programme guide. Ideally it would be good to have a single guide which allows both full recording options of future programmes (one-off and series) AND ability to select previously screened programmes to watch via an on-demand app.

* I like the automatic ability to shift a recording to a + channel when there's a clash; I'm assuming this will be used to manage those circumstances of the overlapping of a start and finish of two programmes? (I don't think questions regarding how the unit deals with overlapping start and finishes raised earlier in this thread have been answered yet)

* Unsure of the advantage of having a volume control on the remote, given this appears to control the output of the unit itself which may potentially lead to confusion for some (eg, managing the volume on both this and the TV).

* For some reason I saw the freeview plus icon on channels where it shouldn't be visible - eg on Prime.

* The interface, while attractive and nicely high res (looking at you, TiVo!), seems to be designed for screens of a fairly large size. My parents won't buy a bigger TV than their current 32", and I feel they may struggle to read the list of recorded programmes without getting up close to the screen (I think this is the worst of the screens for this - just too much text of a too small a size).

* The other text that is too small is that attached to the colour-coded shortcuts at the bottom of the screen (those using the 'teletext' buttons).

* Some of the apps also have legibility issues, especially on smaller TVs eg the green on white text on the TVNZ app, especially when adding a programme to favourites, is difficult to read (terrible design!). I think it was the TV3 app which was generally terrible for legibility as the fonts are just too small. Understand this reflects Freeview Plus issues as opposed to the actual product, but it doesn't help usability.

* What would be really useful is a more agnostic approach to the on demand apps, which would allow users to see and access 'favourites' or 'most watched' programmes across all the channels (not limited to one app). I understand this is beyond the scope of Freeview Plus, but I know it would make usage for people like my parents far easier.

For my own personal use, there are a couple of other features I'd like to see added before I'd jump at the opportunity to buy one, both related to its networking ability - 1. the ability to watch content on other devices. I know it can screen 'live' TV via a browser, but here I'm talking about the ability to watch recorded and live content on another of the same units or via DLNA or similar to a laptop, tablet, other TV etc; and 2. remote recording, a la TiVo Genie.

While I've had no response to my post above, I thought I'd add another comment:

The device is set to automatically disable the pass-through of the aerial signal to the television (when daisy-chained). The default is to have a power-saving mode turned on, however there is no mention of this in the instruction manual. The unit uses some three-letter acronym for it, but this isn't defined or mentioned in the manual.

My parents were saying they weren't getting any TV signal unless they had the T2200 switched on; I looked through all the menus for something obvious around power-saving or aerial pass-through, but couldn't find anything. Only googling the three-letter acronym contained in one of the menus came up with a result for the same setting on another Dish TV product, which had the intended result. The advantage of having sorted this out (other than my parents' TV getting a signal!) means the device is quicker to turn on.

Dish TV - my suggestions based on this experience are:

* don't use meaningless acronyms in the device's menu settings
* don't have the power saving mode on by default, given this is likely to confuse many people (and even more so given the points above and below)
* ensure you explain this setting in the manual, including noting how it speeds up start-up times

At the moment, we are still sticking to what Freeview New Zealand wants in terms of the skipping feature according to their guidelines. Perhaps a discussion with Freeview may help?

Freeview NZ Hi Wayne, we already have free-form FF/RW on all MyFreeview PVRs in NZ. So in NZ, you already have the freedom to FF or RW on playback of the programmes you record with your MyFreeview PVR.

- Wayne just referring to the skip function being locked to 10 min each way . I have owned a magic tv for quite a number of years and now have the T2200 as well . Skip function is very very handy . 3min skip forward is what i was wondering about . Obviously we could get the Aussie firmware updates , but would be great to share our firmware the same way we do NRL players.

- Freeview NZ That's one for Dish TV the manufacturer - theybe updating the firmware for the Australian market so you could ask them if they plan to do the same for the NZ recorders. Next time we see them we'll check with them too but you might want to drop them a line now -www.dishtv.co.nz

Following with interest. I know TiVo was specifically blocked from having a convenient 'x' minute skip function for commercial reasons - commercial as in not being able to see advertisements at all. As TVNZ and one of the Australian FTA broadcast networks co-owned Hybrid who have the NZ/AU rights to TiVo they obviously fought tooth and nail for not having ad skipping technology.
