So after the latest firmware update, what are the pros and cons of this STB please? Is there a website with a list of specs, etc please? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if these are new features with the latest version or not but I've not noticed either before and I accidently pressed the buttons to find them out - I've not seen them documented anywhere.

Press the M-P button and a 3x3 grid pops up showing you a live still of what's on each of the first 9 channels. It has to go thru each channel in turn to get the still, then it shows the channel you were on a live moving video.

An even better button is the CH Page down button - that allows you to TimeShift the live channel. Eg. if you take a phone call you can press this button and then pause the live video. When you're done, press play to carry on, then fast forward thu the adverts until you're up to date! Great feature.

For the posting above, the pros for this box are they are cheap and do a great job as a cheap n cheerful freeview box with simple DVR and now Timeshift recording. The cons are it's only a single tuner (just buy 2 of them, they're that cheap ), for the price you cannot complain about any other cons. The timer isn't the most intuitive but once you've got the hang of it all is good. I have missed a couple of recordings in the previous firmware but this latest one seems better.

anyone seen the GranView units on Trademe? They look to be very similar units to the Digistar units.

I have seen the GranVision 28037c, if that is what you are referring to as GranView, and must say I have been tempted - if you get one I await the review with interest! It does look similar, although it is not identical - it has two scart connectors at the back for a start (not a bad thing). I suspect they may be related.

One of the problems with the Digistars is their mysterious origin, and lack of web site. At least the GranVision people have a web site with downloads and promise of support. I have found Geekzone the best source of information on the Digistar - neilinnz?s post above is a beaut! I had though of getting one of the GranVision units two get over what I see as the one remaining problem - lack of two tuners - while avoiding (hopefully) remote conflict.

I regard the Digistar as my favourite little toy - cheap, very cheerful and now even reliable.

Do the GranVision's have component-out on the SCART?

I asked the guy selling them on Trademe:

"From the photo, the receiver seems to have two scart connectors - can you tell me what they are for? (e.g. scart to component video)"

The answer was short and disappointing: "composit."

Gentlemen, I've just bought an 811u on Trademe, based on the good information found here.

I have a couple of quick questions that have to do with HD.

I already have two other Sat Receivers and two dishes installed (not by me) and I can get all the Freeview and all the Thai/Russian/Greek/Japanese/Religious channels I need.

I've just discovered that my Dell-2407WFP Monitor can do HD, and as I have a spare hole on the switch/splitter that runs the other two receivers, that's where the new 811u comes in.

So my question is: All the info I can find online seems to suggest that HD on Freeview is accessed through a UHF aerial. Is this true? Or can HD be got from the satellite feed?

And one last question, does the 811u do HD?

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers

MN

Freeview Satellite is SD only, so no free HD transmission

The component outputs seem to only do 576i for avi and mpg playback.

Does anyone else have trouble getting all the Freeview Channels? I get 1,2,3,C4, Te Reo, Parliament. Stratos, Cue, Weather (which never has anything on it) and that's about it. Seem to be missing the extra TVNZ Channels.- 6 and 7. Is Sport extra supposed to be on Sat too or is that only terrestrial? I am tuning to Optus D1

Strange about no 6 and 7 - although I was not aware of the weather channel. Sport was on sat, but stopped a few days ago. If you are getting the rest, a rescan should find 6 & 7 - I have just done it to try to find the weather channel and 6 & 7 are as strong as the rest.

Thank you for that information, I wonder if I can tune the 811u to both the satellite feed and the UHF aerial. I'll report if I succeed.

I have scanned quite a few times (like after 2 firmware upgrades...). I have tried various scan methods but always seem to get the same results. Lots of encrypted pay channels... My dish may not be perfectly aligned - I have a rental place so it probably isn't mounted in the best place but if 6 and 7 are as strong as the others then it should find it... It is also a 90 cm dish so should be OK... I live in Blenheim not that it should make any diff for sat.

Does anyone know what levels you should see on the screen when it is scanning? Is there another place in the menus to check level?

These are Freeview's transponders: 12456 H 22500 and 12483 H 22500

You could be getting One and TV2 from Sky's transponder: 12671 H 22500, hence no TVNZ6.

Since you already get 3, C4, Te Reo, etc, this means you have found 12456 H 22500.

TVNZ 6 is on 12483 H 22500. Try scanning that one.

Just got one of these and seems to be working well. Just a thought, I am using a USB HD (ex laptop in USB enclosure) and wonder if I should detach it when not recording as otherwise the drive is always powered up, would this hurt it?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

That makes sense, and is what I do.
