Whoa there! I certainly haven't noticed any significant heat build-up. While it is possible the units are getting too hot it's way overboard to say they aren't ventilated. There is substantial venting grills all around the box, particularly underneath.

And on that note do make sure the bottom is clear for air to flow in.

I wasn't asserting that directly or necessarily specifically at the MagicTV box, but rather responding to bfinger's post above. As a general observation, however, overheating from this cause would be poor form & function.

That's odd, the beta3 rewind bug has vanished today. On the whole FFwd/Rwd might be a little more stable, not sure, still plenty jumpy.

There is one nice new feature that has become apparent though, the skip backwards is now 6 minutes instead of 10 minutes. So it's easy to skip 4 minutes ahead by doing one skip forward plus one skip backward. :)

A new bug also: Deleted channels list doesn't work. I have to flip through every channel available when surfing.

Upgraded as soon as I read this. That change to the skip back is the best feature they've added!

I upgraded straight from 3.09 -> 3.13b2

Deleted channels are still deleted
FFWD/RWD seem smoother and faster to respond to changes in direction than 3.09

MagicTV is the best, think I might get another one for the Mrs

I have noticed a couple of issues

1) Selecting YcbCr in the advanced video options over RBG puts the TV into a purple hue. I can't reverse this without turning everything off and on again. The MagicTV is connected by HDMI to a Sony Bravia KLV40D300A via a Denon AVR589 (acting as an HDMI switch). Neither manual for these devices mentions RGB or YcbCr?

2) When playing back there is a playback icon that flashes on the screen from time to time - how do you disable this (again, could not find a reference to a 'playback icon' in the menu)
>> EDIT: I found the answer on page 53 - it is a 'logo' not an 'icon :)

Well I decided to load beta 3 as it seemed to have some handy improvements.
However I may have found a bug so figured I would see if anyone else is having the same problem.

While watching a recorded program you get to an add break. Press jump forward 10 mins followed by jump back 6 mins. Now if you are a little slow pressing the jump forward or the add break is a little short the magic starts playing a little into the actual program that you are watching. (no problem so far). Now you need to back up a wee bit, so you press fast reverse (to get 2x reverse) to go back to the end of the add break. That's where I get a problem.
When I press the fast reverse to back up a wee bit it jumps along way back. I have not looked closely to see exactly how far it goes, but if you jump forward one or two 10 minute jumps and then a little fast forward as well (just playing around with it) and then press the fast reverse it goes right back to about where you first pressed the jump 10 minutes the very first time. i.e. start of the first add break.

If you just use fast forward and fast reverse it seems to work fine but if you jump 10 minutes then try to fast reverse it jumps back.

My time shift set up is
Instant rewind on
Instant rewind period 1 hour.

Not sure why this would have an effect as I was testing with recordings made previously, not rewinding live TV. Or is there something I don't understand?

I will try it with recordings that have been made since I upgraded to the new firmware and see if it still has the same result.
If it does I may have to go back to the old firmware and then reload the new again.

My Magic has been running ok until about 10pm last night, when it gave up the ghost
with recording or watching live TV.  It still plays back recordings ok, but any attempt to
watch live TV or record anything gives the dreaded "no signal" message in the middle of
the screen.
I know my aerial and cables are OK, cos I watch "normal" Tv with the signal daisy-chained
through the MTV.

Looks like I'm off to Noel Leeming tomorrow to take it back.
Anyone know what the likely repair turn around time is?
Will I lose all my recordings?

You could be having signal issues with freeview only, have you still got reception for prime on analogue, has your aerial moved in any way, and what are the results when you do a signal strength test on the frequencies (the three total, one for each of the muxes) used in your area for freeview?

Beta 3 is not a typo of beta 2 : )

rosswakelin: it might be a failure of your aerial setup rather than your MagicTV

I too have loaded the beta 3 firmware and have the same bug. If I skip forward (10 minutes), then skip back (6 minutes),  then press the fast rewind, the program will start playing at it's location before the first Skip Forward.  I will have a bit more of a play, but I did try the Skip forward and backward, then fast forward briefly and play briefly, and then when I pressed the Fast Reverse, it worked correctly.

Thanks for the ideas but...
nothing in the aerial setup has changed,
Prime reception is still ok (never been good -oh sorry thats the content
not the signal)
And its not a "marginal" signal, its NO signal at all as far as the
magic is concerned.  Sounds like an internal fault with the cards.

You can confirm that in the channel settings where it shows the RF signal strengths.

Channel 50 is a good one to test with here in Christchurch. To give some guide: I'm sitting around 75% strength and getting 100% quality. When I had it at 70% strength quality was in the high 90's.

Regarding the beta3 rewind bug, I found it vanished after I left the unit overnight, during which time it had recorded some programmes. I suspect if you record anything it'll come right.

i have tried the beta 2 and the beta 3 and there is a rewind issue in b3 but not in b2
so i would recommend b2 as the most stable at the moment
