Wondering about using a USB stick to record to, anyone know the file size that the unit generates per min or hour?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Just over 2 Gb per hour. Lovely Mpg recording that is very transportable.

So a 4gb stick should handle movies OK, thanks for that.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

You might want to consider a bigger stick than that. 16GB sticks are quite reasonably priced at present.

I recall reading in the manual for the 811U I have, that recording to a USB stick was not recommended. Some waffle about the way sticks write/store large files?

With the first firmware, usb flash were a bit shonky, but latest firmware seems to have fixed that.

How is it at playing XVID files from a USB stick?
Also - what is the EPG like. I was looking at another unit (coship) and the EPG was just plain wrong most of the time (but whetehr that is the unit or freeview itself I dont know).

XVID are fine, have had some problems with weird Audio codecs. One or two I have had to re-encode using Any video converter and they are fine after that.

EPG seems to be ok

I just bought one of these units too and to be honest I am impressed with what you get for the money. I got a whole host of games that took my back to the 80's - a disk was supplied with 20+ games. The kids love the retro gaming ;-)

All the video formats work but with the .vob files that I have ripped from my DVD there is no sound. I see someone else has asked this one but has had no reply. I could convert them to .avi but it will take some time for all my catalogue.

Any ideas?

Greetings all.

I'm at wits end tying to get this thing working perfectly - of course I paid, like most of you, not much for some pretty good technology, but my big problems really should be fixed at some stage:

1) Whenever I record from 17:20 to 18:15, it stops recording at 18:01!
2) If programming in a repeating programme for days 1-5, then you cannot set ANYTHING to record on days 6 OR 7 during that time!

Latest update appears to be 0905 but not fixing this problem - does anyone know where these updates a sourced from - i.e. somewhere on the web that will have the latest update when it becomes available!

The guy I bought it off on TradeMe really appears to be pretty "sus" and I can't get any incriminating information from him :(

Definitely, it should not record outside the set parameters. The system clock which is what you see on its LED when turned off should be accurate, because it syncs on the TV station time signal. As for the repeat program mode I am afraid thats a bit of a glitch you may have to live with for a while. I find it a most useful device for recording the odd program that is on when we are not there, but more importantly as a media player for a USB hard drive.
If you feel confident enough, you might try a system reset which would mean having to retune it but that MAY get rid of the offending time recording problem for one off recordings.

Thanks for the ideas ageorge. I have tried the system reset a number of times, and reinstalling the firmware to make sure, but I suspect it is, as you say, best for recording individual programmes - the repeats don't seem to work too well. Although I DO recall (maybe previous firmware?) of programmes starting recording at the incorrect time and finishing early.

Another thread suggested that the latest timed-in programme sets the duration for ALL programmes beforehand, and that would make sense based on my timer programmes. Everything seems to record for 41 minutes which is the exact length of "In The Night Garden" for my daughter. Happens to be the 3rd (and last) item in the timer schedules!

must agree regarding the media player being the main reason why I use this machine. The recording is a nice to have but it is a very cheap media player that plays divX perfectly. Now if only I can get my .vob files to work . . .

Hi All
I have just bought 2 of these, good value for money, but (there is always a but) i am new to Satelite TV (free that is) i am just setting mine up, i have 2 LNB's and want to setup 1 for D1 and 1 for D2, I am also using a Diseqc switch, what settings do i need to use in the setup, when i dont use the switch i get D1 no problem, as soon as i plug the switch in i cant get anything to work, any advise would be much appreciated

When I record a movie to the external USB hardrive, it records in 2 parts, the first always being 3800 MB. Is this some sort of limit when recording?
