Another quesion on hardware: anyone successfully running DVB-T on an Athlon 64 X2 dualcore? If so, what video card are you running and which X2 is it? Also do you have GPU h.264 rendering enabled?

My media box is:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
2x 1GB DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Dual channel
Geforce 9600 GT 512MB PureVideHD (h.264 GPU decoding enabled through PowerDVD)
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-4000 (using DVB-T tuner only)
Microsoft Vista Ultimate (32-Bit)

I'm running 32bit at the moment but may try to run 64bit, however people I have spoken to have run into issues with 64bit Vista which is why I haven't made the change earlier. All my devices in my media box however have 64bit drivers so may be worth a go.. haven't decided yet :P

I've got a X2 4800 and using software decoding this was around 80% CPU usage. I believe X2 4400's were maxing out at close to 100% CPU utilisation.

I have an ATI2600Pro which has onboard H.264 and this drops way down once it's enabled.

Media center runnig DVBViewer no problems here.

Amd X2 3800+
Nvidia 7600GT hdmi 256mb
2GB ram + 2GB readyboost
Nova-T USB2 for DVB-T
PVR500 for dual Analogue.
Vista x64 Ultimate + SP1
WD Raptor 74gb system drive, WD 250gb recording drive.
37" Philips 1080p set.
Auzentech 7.1 THX Sound
Creative Gigaworks 7.1 THX Speakers

Can record analogue and watch DVB-T with no problems. Also playing 720p videos with no problem. CPU usage can be 40-60% but that is no problem. TV is a little stuttery to start with but after a minute is fine. Will be buying a bluray player in the very near future, that will test it all at 1080p but I am pretty sure it will work ok.

I thought with a video card with on board codec support, CPU could drop down to 5-10% on something like a Athlon 3800 X2

Tried it with a 4400+ no hardware H.264 decoding and it was 100% CPU utilisation with stuttering in some of the more complex scenes.

If video card - hardware decoding is not an option, i.e. AGP slot only, then I would suggest the most powerful CPU that your motherboard/socket-type will allow.

Personally I think this really pushing sh*t up hill. I think if you want to have painless decode of 720p then you will have to update your architecture :( . Easy for me I to say I guess; I'm way over due for an update anyway.

You're good to go lchiu7, that link says "Avivo Video Post Processor - Dedicated unified video decoder (UVD) for H.264/AVC and VC-1 video formats" which is what you're after on the ATI cards. Let me know how the 2600 works out I've heard they run rather nicely

Where did you get it from? Friend of mine is in the same boat but been finding it a bit hard to find a place that has them and is not asking a silly price.

Couldn't agree more, but for some on a tight budget, it's not an option.

H.264 on-the-fly decoding has really lifted the bar in terms of overhead on a system. Everything but the latest generation in CPU's and GPU's are rendered under-powered. I built my new box 4 months ago with this in mind - it's always difficult trying to "future-proof" yourself, the concept is kind of flawed in this technology area anyway, but I think the requirements for the HD-era are reasonably clear in terms of min hardware and HDCP.
